Babies, TV, and the skip=340 (aka the end of the road)

A really good friend invited me to be present when she gave birth. Her due date wasn't until this Tuesday, but I got called in last Wednesday. After many long hours, she gave birth to a beautiful, perfect, baby girl at 6:30 PM Thursday. It was, by far, the most amazing thing I have ever witnessed.

Also, in my totally unbiased opinion, she's the cutest baby ever. Unfortunately, due to SNOWPOCALYPSE 2014, I haven't been able to spend every spare moment staring at her in person, instead haunting facebook in case her parents post any more pictures.

I have been watching:

Castle (still the cutest cop drama on TV)
Sleepy Hollow (taking home the award for most cracktastic show of all time)
Community (my thoughts are complicated and indistinct)
Arrow (I have been slowly being consumed by Oliver/Felicity shipping. Fair warning.)
Agents of SHIELD (I've been enjoying the last few episodes to the point where I'm looking forward to watching it each week. As opposed to when it first aired and I wasn't whelmed at all.)

I have been tumblring all over the place. I mostly don't get on a real computer at home anymore, and tumblr is so much easier than lj on mobile. Excuses, excuses. I know.

Anyway, I signed on today and was scrolling through my flist and APPARENTLY, skip=340 does not exist. I'm pretty sure I'd made it to the point where I'd seen the posts already anyway, but still!

2013 Fannish Roundup

We are here again, my dear friends. It is time for the annual reckoning, that fannish evaluation that decides whether we live or die or join tumblr!

Okay, so I already joined/started actually using tumblr. What can I say? I appreciate the daily scroll of pretty! Tumblr is actually not a bad place for me right now. Most of the time, it involves pretty pictures of pretty people, cute animals, or funny comics. Some of the time, there are links to meta and essays that make me think. Sometimes there is even fic--though honestly, fic was a very small part of my life this year.

Still, I did write some.

Teamwork. Stargate SG-1, Sam/Jack.
Two Things Sam and Janet Don't Have in Common (and One Thing They Do). Stargate SG-1, Gen.

TWO?! I ONLY WROTE TWO FICS?! I guess that means I have to stay on tumblr.

I re-watched Legend of the Seeker (again). The epic hair, forbidden love, cheesy humor, beautiful scenery, pretty people, shiny swords, and female friendships all make me very happy--and the show is only two seasons long, which makes it easy to rewatch.

I got very fannish about Once Upon a Time.

I started a Farscape re-watch that I didn't finish… yet. I'll get there. It's SUCH a good show, but I totally got sucked into a Doctor Who rewatch instead--I was trying to get caught up for the Day of the Doctor, and I ended up starting back with Nine, because I could and because I had to wait a very long time for the latest DVDs from the library. I have part of a post put together about the Awesomeness of Donna Noble, which I hope to get together and post early in 2014.

However, I also tried to watch Torchwood: Miracle Day. Ugh. Just… ugh. Gave up.

I was really, really, really obsessed with Iron Man 3.

You know that 5K I was talking about?

I've done 4 5Ks. The first I exclusively walked. The second I ran about two minutes' worth and walked the rest. The third I ran the first and last thirds (or so).

Then, one of my coworkers, M, said we should do the holiday run. I had a grand plan to work on being able to run the whole 3.1 miles--as well as work a little on my running speed. I had a six-week plan and seven weeks to do it.

Unfortunately, I didn't actually follow the plan. In fact, the last three weeks, I didn't run at all. I was already committed to do the run, though, and my coworker S was counting on me running/walking with her.

So today I set out running with S. Our plan was to run as much of the course as we could, and then walk the rest. We passed what we thought was the one-mile mark and celebrated... and then passed another one about a quarter-mile down the road. The first one, of course, was for the half-marathon and not the 5K. But either way, we'd run one mile. Then we passed the two-mile mark, still running. At that point, we figured we'd better keep running, because we were really almost there.

So without thinking about it too much, I ran an entire 5K--for the first time ever! I ran it in 47:05, which is about the same speed I would have walked it. :-)

Do you ever look at your journal calendar and think, "Oh, it's been way too long since I posted. I should fix that."

But then, because you feel so GUILTY about the whole thing, you just can't bring yourself to write anything breezy and quick, because you feel like you have to make up for the fact that you haven't posted since October.

Just me?

What about thinking about the last time you exercised and realizing it was several weeks ago and yes, you did sign up for a 5K which is this Sunday?

Just me.

(But I did win NaNo this year! I am pretty sure all my words sucked, but that's okay, because I wrote 50,000 sucky words, which is 50,000 more than I thought I'd manage to write this year.)

Can we talk about Castle? (6x01: Valkyrie)

It's all spoilers from here on out. I would request that no one spoils *next* week's episode if they actually know things, but speculation is fine!

Updates: running, condo, Gaming, Ficathons, TV

I keep seeing other people apologize for not having posted in a while, and think, "Oh, yeah, I haven't seen them around." Then I take a look at my own journal and realize I'm in the same boat. I keep thinking that I post more often... probably because I read my fee just about every day and comment on other people's posts. Anyway, here's some news from my life:

Previously, on The Running Saga, I ran for 35 minutes straight. Recently, I ran for a lot longer than 35 minutes and ran for 3.25 miles on Labor Day. I estimate that the running part took me approximately 55 minutes or so, making my running speed considerably slower than my walking speed and probably putting me in the running for the Slowest Runner Ever award.

The season finale of The Running Saga was my attempt to run through the entire Color Run (an easy, flat 5K). I DID run approximately 2/3rds of the course, but the middle was really loose gravel that defeated even my sluggish pace. I finished strong and definitely feel good about what I did accomplish.

It's weird, because if anyone had told me I'd ever run three miles at once, at any point prior to oh, last October, I would have laughed in their face. Now I find myself saying things like, "What I really want to do is work on my speed and get to where I can run a 5K in about 30-35 minutes."

My condo and I are getting along really well. There is still plenty to do, but nothing that needs to be done Right Now. My roommate also moved in a couple weeks ago, and I think that's going to work out well. The only problem so far has been making myself go to bed instead of staying up and watching TV and talking with her!

Video Games
I am always so far behind on these things--but I want to record this here anyway: I FINALLY beat Mass Effect. Yes, the first one. I'm still unspoiled for the next two, too (well, mostly), and I'm pretty happy about that. I really enjoyed it, especially once I figured out where I'd gone wrong (let me count the ways) and fixed it. So once I get a few minutes, I'll start on the second one and see what happens.

I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] sg1friendathon with a Sam & Janet prompt that I have no ideas for. I started writing something that I think has potential, but it doesn't really fit the prompt at all. I'd feel worse about that, but... it was my own prompt. So hopefully I'm the only person I'll disappoint. Anyway, the dealine is coming up way too quickly, so we'll see what happens.

What I plan on watching this fall
Once Upon a Time
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (okay, I think that'll just be SHIELD from now on)
The Neighbors
New Girl
Parks and Recreation

I can't see how I'll have time for all that, but if I have extra, I have these two on my list:
Person of Interest

Anything else I should DEFINITELY put on my list?

I dunno if it counts as finding it when I followed syxp's own link, but Jack can read your mind. There's no comments on it besides mine, so I'm guessing something weird happened with the space/time continuum.

Today is Perfect and Nothing Hurts (Running and Sharknados)

First, I just finished an eight-week running program that is, theoretically, a Couch to 5K program. However, it's all done by time, and I am slow, so I just ran a little over 2 miles in 35 minutes.

The important part here is that I. Ran. For. Thirty-Five. Minutes. Straight.

I felt so good I ALMOST thought that it might be fun to keep running. :-)

I hesitate to put this out there, but I feel like it might be useful or encouraging knowledge for someone: I haven't lost a pound since I started running--and no, I wasn't trying to lose any weight. I haven't changed my eating habits and I haven't gone up or down a size, either. It's certainly possible that I am eating more calories, but I haven't felt like I'm eating a ton more than I was before. I DO feel much stronger and way more fit--it's constantly surprising to me how much MORE I can do without feeling out of breath. Anyway, there's some anecdotal evidence for you to use as you see fit.

... and now for the Sharks!

I wasn't able to actually watch Sharknado, but I almost don't care. People's tweets last night made me happy, and I have a few links to keep here for maximum joy:

(All of these have spoilers.)

Cleolinda compiles everything she knows about Sharknado

Cost and Consequences of Magic in Once Upon a Time

I'm sorry about this, but I just can't let it go. I put together some thoughts about the cost and consequences of magic in Once Upon a Time and some reasons why I think the magic system in the show is broken and terrible and needs to be fixed. I did this mostly from memory and my own impressions, so if you think I'm wrong about something or am missing important examples, please comment!

P.S. I know it's "Rumplestiltskin" and not "Rumpelstiltskin" in Once, but is it shortened to Rumple or Rumpel?

Writing meta-y fic

I think sometimes, when I start writing in a fandom, I start by writing fic that is almost meta. It's like I'm trying the characters out, seeing how the relationships that I see inside my head comes out on paper.

It's also often wish-fulfillment fic.

Not that this is coming up now for any particular reason or anything.

(As a side note, I sort of wish that it was still that time in my life when I didn't even *think* to look at articles about actors, or see quotes from them, or ridiculously cute set photos. I think that stuff gets in the way of my pure and unadulterated shipping. /grumpy old fan moment)

Meme: Firefly Character Quiz

This is why I almost never have a good character assignment in my friend groups. You know, when your friends are talking about a fandom and they try to decide who is like which character? Yeah, I'm nearly impossible, and this quiz seems to agree. :-) My thanks to [livejournal.com profile] pepper_field for the link!

Music in my Mind

On occasion, I've had the pleasure of waking up to a full-scale orchestra playing a composition just for me. It sounds as if I'm listening to live music--like the strings and woodwinds and brass and everyone is gathered around my bed to serenade me awake. The illusion is fragile--one breath that's too deep or a slight shift of my head, and it dissolves, fading into the background or dissipating entirely.

I've always assumed that not everyone has had that particular experience, but I was sitting at my desk today with my usual round of song snippets in my head* and thought: "Huh. I don't know that I've ever NOT had a song in my head."

I have songs playing in my mind when I am at work, or swimming, or reading, or driving (even when I don't have the radio on). And then I realized, based on how I've heard other people talk about having music stuck in their heads, that they MIGHT NOT have a constant low-level radio playing in the background of their thoughts. So I asked my coworkers.

One said she hardly ever has songs stuck in her head. Another said she had music in her head about 10% of the time.

So now I'm curious to know what other people's experience is.

*Currently I have about three songs that I'm switching between--and it's not like I listen to one song all the way through and then move on to the next--one song gets stuck in little pieces, and then all of the sudden it's a different song's pieces.

I also tend to add my own rhythm section by tapping my molars together in a way that makes my dentist despair.
