holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (books_stack)
I figure today might be a good day to talk a little about my offline life, considering it has been one of my most relaxing Saturdays in recent history.

Recent Successes:

1. Although going into work early and staying late on Thursday wasn't my idea of fun, it did allow me to have a pleasantly busy (not hellish) Friday in which I got CAUGHT UP. I love it when that happens.

2. I cooked vegetarian chili today (for the chili cook-off tomorrow) and despite a rather unfortunate incident involving tomatoes and my shirt, I now have (hopefully) award-winning vegetarian chili.

3. I fit all of the chili AND the previous occupants of the fridge into the fridge.

4. I found two possible recipes to help my use my still-good-but-not-good-enough-to-eat-plain cottage cheese and shall try one of them tomorrow.

5. I forgot to renew a library book last night, but it turns out that you can still renew on the date it's due! I love my library.

Denial of Self involves NOT watching the new Sanctuary episode, even though I really want to… I'm going to use this windfall to practice patience (hah) and also be able to watch on the actual night it airs rather than the next day! I'm so excited!

My Clean Kitchen probably isn't exciting to anyone except me, but after using half of the items in the kitchen to make chili, a clean kitchen is close to a miracle.

As for Books, I took a short break from reading Sherlock Holmes mysteries (which are still charming my socks off) and read One Con Glory, by Sarah Kuhn, which is a fun, frivolous, fanficcy novel about a journalist covering the con circuit who accidentally falls for the pretty boy star of a TV show based off her childhood comic-book fandom. The book is quite short, and was an absolute riot.

I also read a romance novel that didn't make me want to cite the protagonists for stupidity: Unveiled, by Courtney Milan. I mean, they sometimes acted stupidly, but it was in-character stupidity.

Now I just need to fold my (clean) laundry.

So my friend sent me this link (which includes a pony of the most disturbing variety) and asked me to help him figure out what the composition was paying homage to. I confessed I couldn't put my finger on it, but perhaps one of my wonderful flist might.

On other news: the buttermilk biscuits I made last night were AMAZING. Again. I swear I could just gobble down all eleven of those and call it a dinner. Although the soup DID complement them nicely. Well, four of them. I did resist eating them all, but mostly because I knew I had brownies for dessert.

No writing the past couple of days, and tonight I have to catch up on LOST, so I'm not sure how much I'll do today, either. BAH. I finally have something I'm excited to work on, and no time to work on it!

The second batch of pizza (made yesterday) turned out fantabulous.

The chocolate chip cookies tonight did not. Too much vanilla, not enough flour. As my roommate said: they tasted fine as long as you were eating them, but the aftertaste was pretty bad. They also glued themselves to the cookie sheet like nothing else.

Terrible.

Guess I'll just have to do better next time.

And: OMG. The figure skating! It was awesome! Must go to sleep now...

Last night I made the most delicious pizza I have ever, ever, ever eaten. Garlic olive oil, fresh basil, cheese, and tomatoes, perfectly combined on a homemade crust (my first ever), in an explosion of culinary delight. I had trouble restraining myself from putting another batch of dough together to make more Right. Then.

I think I'm getting this cooking thing!

I've been doing my cartwheels faithfully (for the most part), and today I did one that I could feel was SO much better than the others. Of course, putting all my weight over one wrist is killing it, so I'm going to have to think about either (1) trying my left side, which will be dangerous to everything around me as well as to my own body or (2) something else which hasn't occurred to me yet. Stopping the cartwheels isn't a very good answer, in my opinion.

I've been thinking about female characters and misogyny and hatred of female characters. I'm starting to think that "If you don't like a particular female character, then you're misogynistic" is simplistic and unhelpful.

You guys, I sometimes don't like female characters.

There, I said it )

Oh, crap. I still have to write my Indulgence Fic.

It's that time again--time to bore you all with my accomplishments in a traditionally feminine sphere!

There's a party tomorrow, and I needed to make something for it. Thus, the following:

cooking
This is roasted sweet potato salad with black beans and chili dressing, and I think the picture captured the utter deliciousness of this dish. When I finished putting it all together, I just about died. It's definitely the prettiest thing I've made yet. (It also smells and tastes divine. *g*) The only thing I think it could use is a bit more spice.

cooking
This is a faux tortilla espanola. Regular tortilla espanola has potatoes, onions, and eggs, and you make it on the stove. This has green onions, chives, sour cream, cheese, red and green bell peppers, potatoes, and eggs, and it's made in the oven. I haven't tasted it yet, because it needs to be in good shape for tomorrow, but it smells awesome.
