holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (Default)
We are here again, my dear friends. It is time for the annual reckoning, that fannish evaluation that decides whether we live or die or join tumblr!

Okay, so I already joined/started actually using tumblr. What can I say? I appreciate the daily scroll of pretty! Tumblr is actually not a bad place for me right now. Most of the time, it involves pretty pictures of pretty people, cute animals, or funny comics. Some of the time, there are links to meta and essays that make me think. Sometimes there is even fic--though honestly, fic was a very small part of my life this year.

Still, I did write some.

Teamwork. Stargate SG-1, Sam/Jack.
Two Things Sam and Janet Don't Have in Common (and One Thing They Do). Stargate SG-1, Gen.

TWO?! I ONLY WROTE TWO FICS?! I guess that means I have to stay on tumblr.

I re-watched Legend of the Seeker (again). The epic hair, forbidden love, cheesy humor, beautiful scenery, pretty people, shiny swords, and female friendships all make me very happy--and the show is only two seasons long, which makes it easy to rewatch.

I got very fannish about Once Upon a Time.

I started a Farscape re-watch that I didn't finish… yet. I'll get there. It's SUCH a good show, but I totally got sucked into a Doctor Who rewatch instead--I was trying to get caught up for the Day of the Doctor, and I ended up starting back with Nine, because I could and because I had to wait a very long time for the latest DVDs from the library. I have part of a post put together about the Awesomeness of Donna Noble, which I hope to get together and post early in 2014.

However, I also tried to watch Torchwood: Miracle Day. Ugh. Just… ugh. Gave up.

I was really, really, really obsessed with Iron Man 3.

I just found this sitting around my drive, nearly complete. I'm hoping I haven't already posted it somewhere. That's happened to me before.

Via [personal profile] rydra_wong and [personal profile] executrix: The Up Goer Five meme in which you describe your canon, using only the ten hundred most common words (and their derivatives).

See Up Goer Five and the Up Goer Five Text Editor.

I should probably have done something else, but I couldn't help thinking that Stargate would be delightfully challenging.

Star Door Team One )

Notes:

1. "Earth" is not allowed. This surprised me.

2. It took me forever to realize that "human" was allowed, so at first I was using "people of the type that live on our ball of ground and water."

3. I'd love to see what other people did for both Stargate and other fandoms.
holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (oops)
Okay, I admit it--I can't stop buying Stargate stuff. Especially Stargate novels. Of course, my one, lone bookstore that used to carry them (I think just for me, even though they didn't know who was buying their one copy of all of the Stargate books) no longer has new ones... but apparently, you can buy them as Kindle books!

YAY.

However, I'm a little shy about buying them without recommendations. Is anyone else still reading them? If not, I'll just bite the bullet and pick up a couple of the ones I haven't read yet--probably Transitions and Oceans of Dust, since those are the next ones. Then I can do reviews. Mwa ha ha!

Title: Bedroom Situation
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Pairing: Sam/Jack

Okay, I finally finished all the meme requests, so I figured I should take a break from the Olympics and do a roundup. I had so much fun with this one--thank you all for playing along. Links below go to the thread for each request, so you can see which prompts I couldn't fill, just for fun. *g*

Summary: If something was going to happen, it would happen soon. AU post-Moebius.
Notes: I've been feeling nostalgic lately, and reading a lot of Sam/Jack fic. I thought, "Hey, if I'm feeling nostalgic, maybe someone else is, too." So I dove into my WIP folder and found this nicely indulgent little thing, waiting for a decent ending.

The Fannish things: there are no spoilers, but there is some flailing )

LIFE things include angsting over getting my hair cut (to the point where I'm working myself into a neurosis of some kind), more birthdays than I can even think about, and an upcoming wedding for one of my good high school friends. Good stuff, but busy stuff!
holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (OTPsmartass)
I just saw a comment from [personal profile] ultranos that said that Stargate is the Hotel California of fandoms, because people move on but they never leave. I can personally attest to that.

Also, I think that once I'm in a fandom, I'm a tenacious little fangirl. Oh, I have my flings, but when a fandom gets me, it gets me HARD, and then I write fics. LOTS of fics. *g* I suppose I might be ready for another True Fandom in about two years or so.

In other news, I am on Pottermore! Let me know if you want my user name, and I'm TOTALLY a Ravenclaw, which I was hoping for with crossed fingers like whoa. :-) :-) :-)

YOU GUYS.

This show, it is SO GREAT. I just finished watching Desperate Measures and Wormhole X-Treme and Proving Ground, and I love it so much it HURTS.

1. I love how Desperate Measures is not "Team rescues Sam from really, really stupid people," but "Team helps Sam rescue herself from really, really stupid people." (Look, the really really stupid people should know better or at LEAST be more cautious, but whatever. Sam kicks ass the whole ep, even if she does get captured by two (three?) very questionable "ninjas.")

2. Wormhole X-Treme? It made me laugh on a not great day, and it just has so many fun, meta-y things. I don't think I'd seen this episode since the Sanctuary season.. two(?) ender with the rapid-fire Zap-zap-zap bit that goes on for two years (at LEAST), and when I got to that part of THIS ep, I just laughed and laughed and laughed and had to lean against the wall to keep from sliding into an absurd little puddle of laughing fish.

3. Watching Proving Ground while knowing what's going on is also pretty hilarious, mostly because there are all sorts of nifty tells throughout the whole Foothold Scenario. Also: Daniel on the phone with Jack and making sure he's not supposed to get shot this time is brilliant.

Last night, after making myself some pasta with cheese, cabbage (fried, and so-so), and some tuna fish (don't even ask), I settled down to be COMPLETELY unproductive. I was so unproductive that I ended up watching Legend of the Seeker vids for quite a bit of the night, in between rounds of bejeweled.

Oh, LotS, with your epic hair and unexpected female friendship and gratuitous cleavage/thighs and pretty, pretty landscapes. *sighs dreamily* No matter how stupid I felt the plot got right at the end of season two, I will never, EVER forget that it did some things so, so right.

I am on the VERY LAST EPISODE of season four of Stargate. Jack not getting all his memos! Jaffa revenge thing! BLOWING UP A SUN.

Is it wrong, though, that I get depressed every time I watch Double Jeopardy? I feel like it's sort of wrong to mourn the robots, but they just get the short end of the stick, and it all happens at once, and they were separate people, damn it.
holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (sam/thor)
If you're the kind of person who likes nearly impossible choices (but not necessarily impossible ones), then there's fun for you at the final round of [livejournal.com profile] sf_marchmadness today! It's Sam Carter versus Aeryn Sun--a very good matchup, indeed!

I am going to make carrot soup tonight, and I'm currently debating about adding the non-orange carrots I have to the mix. I think it might make it look disgusting, but I'm not sure. Thoughts?

My SG-1 rewatch is still going strong. I just finished 2010 this morning more nostalgia below )
holdouttrout: parrot that says *thinks at you* (telepathic_parrot)
You guys, I am SO IN LOVE with this show all over again. Though season three is making it rather hard not to fall back into my rabid Sam/Jack shipper ways. *uses obscurely appropriate icon that may or may not be available over on lj these days*

There are looks, you guys. Some of them are looks that express things. Okay, mostly things like, "I find you amusing even though I think it says bad things about my sense of humor, sir," or "Carter, I still don't understand what you just said, but I'm hoping you're right." Or other things like, "Uh oh, Daniel's got that alien princess/leader/artifact thing going on again." But Still. Looks.

Also, there is much OT3 subtext. And OT4. And Sam/Teal'c. And fun teamy friendship.

I just watched Shades of Grey, and Jack was a total ass. I really hope they gave him crap for quite a while. I mean, yes, understandable, but wow. Total ass.

I am still not quite sure what to think about One Hundred Days. I think... I think maybe I just wish it ended a bit differently, but I'm not sure exactly how. I even like Laira, but... augh. I have a sneaking suspicion my ambivalence *might* come from my Sam/Jack proclivities. Maybe.

On the other hand, Urgo just makes me giggle the whole way through. I love that Teal'c gets to take part in the wacky alien influence this time around, because he often has to be the odd man out--this is always blamed on Junior, and while it does make some sense, it also means that he gets left out of some fun shenanigans.
holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (sam/thor)
1. Don't you hate it when you suddenly remember something you've been needing to look up online, and you go to do it, and then the phone rings, so you spend a couple of minutes being pleasant while you're thinking, "Can't forget! Mustn't forget!" only to hang up and find out that you've forgotten?

2. Why is it that the sound of my coworker texting, which is a really quiet almost-typing sound, drives me to contemplating scaling the cubicle wall and snapping off the QWERTY keyboard part of her phone?

3. SG-1 is still SO my show. ♥ I've been re-watching, and am in season three (Yes, again. Be quiet.) and I just have so much love for Sam and Teal'c this time around (mostly Sam & Teal'c right now). Jack just cracks me up, but that hasn't changed. I just watched a scene this morning from Rules of Engagement that goes something like this:

Sam: Oh, hey! Colonel O'Neill has a great idea about how to accomplish this goal, don't you, sir?

Jack: *looks confused* "Uh... okay?"

Sam: *explains idea*

Teal'c: That is indeed a good idea, O'Neill.

Jack: *looks confused and smug*

It's a great scene. Especially Teal'c pwning. Also, I guess Daniel's okay. *grins*

3b. I have to say, though, that Point of View wins the award for most awkward kiss ever. I can't decide whether I want to kill Jack for (our) Sam*, sympathize with Dr. Sam, or just watch the kiss again. It's very confusing!

*Not so much because I feel that only our Sam should be kissed by Jack, but because it's such an asshole thing for him to do in the first place, especially in front of her and the whole rest of the base.

4. I'm still watching-but-not-obsessing-about Revenge and Once Upon a Time. I want my characters to be a bit more competent, please! I think Emma (Once) needs a more immediate villain or something she can actually win at for a change.
holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (OTPsmartass)
This is a compilation of the fics that I keep going back to, time and time again, for a shot of the stupid cute, be they funny, smutty, angsty, or crackalicious. Are we still saying -licious?

See? This is how nostalgic I'm getting!

Of course, these barely scratch the surface of all the fics I know, love, and re-read. I mean, it's really ridiculous how many are NOT on this list. But I have to go to bed sometime!

More Sam/Jack fics are tagged here. Also, I highly recommend searching out the other fics by any and all authors mentioned in this post, and I'm sure I forgot some very talented writers, too.

Recs under here! )
holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (Sam_angry)
Okay, so real life intervened into my re-watching, and then when I did rewatch real life got in the way of writing my reactions, and then I was left staring at the computer screen trying to remember what in the world I was going to say... so I had to re-watch again.

Oh, darn.
