holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (Default)

I started off the year right and decided to try running another mile (my second) on January 1. This despite the fact that the most I'd run since I RAN my mile was a quarter of a mile. I don't mean at once. I mean at all. I mean, it WAS all at once, but... well, you get the point.

But the good news is that I DID run a whole mile. I did!

I'm just paying for it today. Yesterday I felt a bit sore, but not too bad. Today my legs are trying to get me to cry.

Ow.

Yay you! Bodies, I find, have a two day cycle. I'm betting 2 days after the run is the worst, and it gets better from there.

My gym teacher (the one who made us all want to cry by making us run multiple wind sprints when we went out for lacrosse, so that we were all ending up late for our classes because stairs were soooo painful to go up and down) swore to us that as paradoxical as it seems, moving around when you are stiff and sore lessens the hurt, because the pain is caused in part by lactic acid buildup in the tissues, and getting moving helps to pump some of that out.

We were incredulous, but since it was gym class, and she wasn't excusing us, we had no choice but to get moving. We were shocked to find that she was right, and we left gym class feeling better than we came in.

Edytted fore ye spellynge.

The other thing that I find really helps is a good warm soak after the exercise, and then bundling up so I don't get cold and stiffen up after that. I do a lot of unconscious tensing of the muscles when I'm cold, and it doesn't take too much of that to add to the overall stiffness. The warm soak has the additional benefit of getting much of the blood flowing away from the core and the muscles and out to the upper layers and the skin in an attempt to cool you down, so more of that nasty lactic acid is moved out fairly quickly, also lessening stiffness.

Thanks! I guess I should have been a bit more careful, but at least I know my lungs and heart are still up to it. :-)

Yeah. It's turning into a three-day rule this time around. Ow! (But I'm still ridiculously happy about it all.)

I think I should have been a bit less ambitious... but the breathing has always been the worst part for me, and that wasn't bad for once!

Oh, well. Live, learn, and work up to it!

It was! The fact that it was still the first contributed to my success, I'm sure. :-) Still, I could do with a bit less ouch.
