River is one of the most useful characters ever created. She joins a long line of lunatic characters as some of the most perceptive and valuable people to ever grace (the page, the screen, etc). These characters' differences from the normal means that authors can use them to point out themes from a new angle.
In The Inside Meaning of Words, Fair-Ithil uses River to show us the characters on Serenity in terms of their words, both inside and out.
Dialogue is one of the best ways to show character, and this fic helps explain why.
