holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (sam/thor)
Okay, so. I've been watching SGU since the beginning, and mostly haven't said a whole lot, partly because I didn't want to bore anyone and partly because my main reaction has been twofold: *yawn* and *OMFGWILLRUSHDIAFALREADY*

Still, I've seen glimmers of hope. I quite enjoyed "Time," "Justice," and "Space," enough to keep watching, anyway. I feel the need to recap "Human" and "Lost," however, so bear with me.

First, I want to talk about Rush and "Human," which was the first ep that didn't make me want to strand Rush on an alien planet... permanently. Mostly because although he was still Rush he had some general motivation for being an ass... and he got called on it by his own subconscious in the form of his dead wife.

I didn't really feel Daniel was all that necessary to the plot, although it was nice to see MS, and funny, too, because of all the glowy light effects they used in his scenes. :-)

I LOVED the Eli and Chloe beg to be allowed to go on the mission scene. "Say something archaeological!" Young trying to keep a straight face was cute, too. I think this is or should be The Team for SGU, and it works for me. (I admit part of the reason is probably the SGU panel with David, Elyse, and Brian, which was really adorable and hilarious.)

Anyway, this felt much more like Stargate to me, what with actually going on a mission, and running into a problem, and okay, the spiders? Totally made me think of the huge-black-hairy-spiders dance of fear. I admit this is a positive association for me and probably helped me like this ep that much more.

Plus, I actually liked that they didn't blow on out of there right on time. I'm a big fan of the close shave, but I don't mind it being a delayed close shave.

"Lost"

So here we have a nascent team-that-might-be, and they're stuck in the labyrinth, and then there's another cave-in, and they have their team member behind the rock wall. I can't say I think they were wrong for leaving, despite my affection for leaving no man behind, a la SG-1. Even SG-1 sometimes had to (temporarily) leave teammates behind.

Greer? I already liked him, but these two episodes sealed the deal for me. I loved his childhood angst, and how it was nicely complicated, and how it wove into the story but wasn't perfectly lined up with his actions. I love that he said there was nothing else the others could have done, and how he felt abandoned anyway.

Eli and crew hopping through the 'gates makes perfect sense--they were really close to being out of options there, and holy big monster! Okay, this whole section reminded me of Sliders. Gotta love the dinosaur planets/realities. *g*

Eli saying they needed to go to the alien ship was actually a nice twist, and Chloe being able to... intuit the system was a nice touch, too. She proved that she wasn't useless in a couple of different ways, and I think she could end up being more than just the "girl Eli has a crush on who is sleeping with Scott." Plus, she's totally cute in the hat.

I really, really expected this to be the close save episode, but when they were dialing I knew it would be Rush that stepped through. I'm not worried about them dying, so I'm actually looking forward to seeing what happens next. I feel like now that SGU has thrown out a bunch of elements they can start using them and tying things together. I just wish they'd used the same elements a little more quickly.

I don't have much to say about the pregnancy stuff, except Destiny better have a lot of condoms for everyone else.

Yeah, I'm a bit ambivalent about this show myself. It has some good points, but some, shall we say, quirks, too. Not quite sure yet, but I haven't given up on it. There's enough good stuff to make it worth watching.

Okay, I think I want to watch SGU at last. I've not been too interested, at least partly because of my flist's reaction to Rush - I knew I was going to want to find him sympathetic, or at least assholish for a good reason (purely for the actor's sake), and it didn't seem like that was happening. It was going to really grate against my instincts. :) And it just feels there's been a general... perking up of interest in the show, lately.

Ha ha! Yes! I was trying to put my finger on it, that's it exactly. I don't think I'd ever leave that ship for fear of being left behind. lol.

Young trying to keep a straight face was cute, too.

I'm kind of enjoying the age divide here - you've got a colonel, then nothing in between rank-wise, until you get to lieutenants (and young, inexperienced ones at that!), not counting the scientists, and Young is kind of like 'oh crap, these are all a bunch of kids with no experience' and he's got to make the best with what he's got and mentor them, but he also can't babysit them all and he's got to let them make mistakes and learn. Except there's very little room for mistakes that might get people killed.

Yes. I'm just hoping it will gel MORE and not less as it continues from this point.

I think the only problem is that while there are hints of his reason for acting like a complete and utter tool earlier on, this ep is the one that actually *says* it. And, you know, points out that it's not actually okay.

Hopefully the show won't pull a 180 from here, though.

Hee! I'd probably get really, really bored on the ship, but I don't know that I'd make it through the 'gate, either.

And yes. Young has a terrible job. Eesh.
