holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] mayogate mentioned that she had attempted to write a bit for [livejournal.com profile] jack_built but everyone was coming out a bit too English-y, so she was going to get back to it later.

Which, hello--totally not against people writing for that damn comm at ALL, in whatever kind of tone they think appropriate, but now I desperately want British-flavoured, geeky apartment dwellers building experimental labs and blowing fuses and generally acting like dorks.

Only I couldn't write it, because my knowledge of actual!Britain is not enough to fill one teacup, while my knowledge of AmericanTV!Britain is plentiful. Sad.

Also, I am feeling kind of bad about the plethora of Sam/Jack in the comm, for which I am more than partially responsible. Please to be not letting us rabid SJ-fen scare the other lovely peeps away now.

And, as a final note, I have to let [livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077 know that while I can't quite imagine Sam/Zelenka as a pairing, I do have my own personal fanon (that doesn't exist yet) in which Sam and Zelenka spend their weekends hunched over a mostly-deserted lab table, far, far away from McKay, trying to solve problems that McKay has either given up on or reprioritized out of his life.

*Nods* I think that'll do for today.

I'm feeling a little bad about all the S/J, too. Well, not bad enough to stop doing it, admittedly. :) But that wasn't the original idea, so I hope some more alternate pairings turn up.

It's funny, you'd think I'd be able to write British nerds. I'm not sure I could, though, without them sounding like caricatures.

I think I'm falling a little in love with Zelenka. I don't ship him with anyone as yet, though.

I am A-okay with that. In fact, I would be just as happy, if not more happy, with Sam-Zelenka friendship fic. Mostly I think those two would/will be awesome together in any situation and I wants it so badly.

(there is a lot of S/J in jack-built and I can say that, as a non-S/J-shipper I am a-okay with it because it is cute)

Damn it! I was counting on you and your British awesomeness to saaave meeeee from certain fic-death.

Zelenka-love is not about the ship. It's about ZELENKA.

I have toyed with the idea of writing other pairings, but haven't yet found one to do, except for one idea that was brilliant--BRILLIANT I SAY! that left as soon as it came, dragging off Cam and possibly Liz(?) with it.

Sigh.

Okay, I wrote something for you just quickly with British in mind, now I just need to be told how to post to the community (am I being particularly dense in not knowing this??) - If anser is bad, please refrain from giving it, in the interests of avoiding MY humiliation....beep

I think we shall be able to comply and write you Sam and Zelenka together. Just...not yet. My brain iz ded of teh ficathons.

And good that you are okay with the icky S/J. ;-) We'll have to get you some Sam/Daniel--soon!

Heh. I had a lot of fun trying to figure this one out when I first started haunting lj. First--you are a member of teh comm, right? Then click as if you were posting to your own journal, and there should be a drop-down menu at the top that says something like, "Post to...". Anyway, jack_built will be an option in that drop-down, so long as you are a member. After that, should be simple.

Also--YAY!

THAT'S OKAY. EVER SINCE I STARTED READING THE FANDOM BIG BROTHER I HAVE WANTED TO USE ALL CAPS IN MY CONVERSATIONS BECAUSE OF THE WAY DEATH TALKS. IT REALLY AMUSES ME TO NO END.

Also--Thank goodness it's Friday.

About the whole S/J thing at [livejournal.com profile] jack_built, I was thinking that same thing the other day, and how I just keep adding to the problem. ;)

I'm hoping to come up with some Daniel/Vala, maybe? Or perhaps John/Teyla or - if I can stomach it - John/Liz. And I would LOVE to see more Sam/Cam or Sam/Teal'c (friendship or romance, I'm not picky).

I actually might get into some Sam/Cam a couple of sequals out in the series I'm writing now. Hopefully.

I'll try to write more to compensate!

I'm actually enjoying the S/J. Or I would be, if I could find time to read the comm. (I swear I'm going to start printing the fic and taking it with me because there's so much of it I can't cram it into my computer time.) It's a totally different setting, so my usual reservations about the ship don't apply. Anyway, I might add more to the Daniel/Sha'uri story at some point, so maybe I'll even it out a little. *g*

Well, I'm very good at point out what's wrong with Brits-as-written-by-Americans-and-other-aliens... I'd find it hard to write, though, in the same way that people can't hear their own accents. I could probably write it if there was actually a character I could base it on (Giles or Spike from Buffy, frex - and OMG does James Marsters do a good job) - but if I tried to write an OC, I've no idea how I'd express their Britishness without using some of the more obvious cliches. It's very weird. There was a British scientist in Endgame, and I didn't realise until about the third viewing. Couldn't 'hear' it.

I was thinking of writing some Sam/Daniel or something... but there's all this stupid-cute Sam/Jack, and it's so cute...

YES, AND I FIND IT DISPRAPORTIONATELY AMUSING.

Also--I am SO GLAD I read Good Omens after you said something about it. You have no idea. All these years, I thought I'd read it, and really I hadn't at all. And was I ever missing out.

Meh. The pairings in the comm will tend to reflect the majority of the people reading. There's plenty of comms like this around for other pairings and slashers. They can play with us if they want, if not then so be it.

Does James Marsters do a good job? That's good to know. I'm terrible about accents--I love them indiscriminately, unless they are REALLY BAD.

I suppose. But I still (almost) feel bad, because at first we seemed like such a diverse kind of group...and then S/J hit like a freight train. ;-P

Ah! I can understand that, definitely. It's like how I have (more or less) no problem with S/J in fandom, but if it shows up in canon I start to get slightly itchy about how it's done?

Again--like Jenn said below--it's not so much a matter of writing less SJ. Because SJ in this universe is especially stupidcute.

It was just something I was worrying about. A little.

I assumed James Marsters was British. I was very surprised to hear he wasn't.

I find accents fascinating - I'm going to have to listen to some of these fanfic podcasts, just to hear what people sound like. :D

My favourite bit is when Crowley and Aziraphale are drunk, and having a conversation about eternity, and how boring it'll be.

And Crowley's method for dealing with houseplants. *g*

I loved it all.

Pepper is awesome, even though she does only show up for little bits.

And I can totally understand the Crowley/Aziraphale love. :-)

I'm thinkin that those two authors together--both awesome authors, btw--are possibly more powerful when their powers combine.

Haa! Well, that's true, and when Pegasus B was going on (a more slash oriented AU like this), even though het fen were more than welcome, they didn't necessarily *feel* welcome. It's just one of those human nature things, I think. We tend to herd together. ;)

But I think the other pairings will get going, especially once people tire of the S/J, or if they run into a wall with their stories.

I love the S/J, but since you guys are all doing so well on that I sort of feel like I can go a different way now! Maybe with the Sam/Cam or the Sam/Daniel. Or Vala/Murray. :D

I really truly don't mind it in fic. It's weird that I can love the fic but have trouble wrapping my brain around the ship - but hey, means I get to read and enjoy it :) and it is CUTE in the AU comm.

My problem with the Sam/Daniel writing is Sha're is there and...I know there's all different threads and no One Right Canon for the AU but that's a concept I have trouble wrapping my brain around.

Vala/Murray!

I'm *so* intending on writing other pairings in this 'vers...I just havne't gotten there, yet.

I've seen the Pegasus B stories around somewhere, and I wasn't aware that it was het-friendly. It seemed to have a timeline of sorts, if I remember correctly.

It amuses me on TV when people mispronounce it, but IRL, it can drive me nuts.

I had one acquaintance in Spain (she was from the States), who was already annoying me, and then she pronounced Oregon wrong, and I just about bit her head off.

I felt really, really bad. *sheepish grin*

Just think of it as a completely different universe--one in which Sha're doesn't exists, or didn't come to the States, or where she's happily engaged to another man.

;-)

But yeah, it does seem, at least so far, that nothing contradicts too badly.
