holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (phelps_fanclub)
No one minds that I'm totally ironic about my use of "fan club," right?

What Does Michael Phelps Eat?

A friend directed me to this. They showed part of it, at least, on NBC on Monday, but it's still interesting. :-)

I saw this last night also. Wow. I'm not even sure where to start...

He says he has trouble keeping the weight on...and I believe it!

OMG. My stomach just got sick.

I know.

Which just goes to show that food intake has a totally different impact on fitness than what we generally perceive. It's not the oversimplified "food=fat=unfit" equation we're constantly bombarded with.

But but but...fat is unhealthy! If you eat fats, you'll get fat! You are what you eat!

*giggle* Every time someone says that, they should be flashed a picture of Phelps' abs.

Of course, the problem with this plan will be that people will start saying those things on purpose, just for the abs.

I'm not sure that's a problem. :-)

I was just talking about this with my workout buddy: how much does that guy eat a day?!? So, yeah, very enlightening. I figured he'd be eating a lot of carbs, but I also thought there'd be more protein in there. Hmmm.

It's possible lunch and dinner are more protein-intensive...

Actually, for high-intensity workouts like this, you want your diet to be close to 75% carbohydrates. Not that protein and fat aren't also good, but it's the carbs that actually fuel your body in that way.

When I was training for my century and I had to go mostly carb-free (and thus protein-heavy) for a week because of Passover, I actually spent most of my time dizzy and drained. So the almost-all-carbs diet for Mr. Phelps makes sense. Even if it's utterly gross.

It sounds kinda like heaven to me, and the only reason that's qualified is because I know my body would reject that amount of carbs in the end.

I don't know whether I'm hungry or nauseous about the whole thing.

*boggles*

And then you wonder when he's finding time to consume that many calories while he's keeping the crazy schedule at the Olympics.

Yeah...they must have food behind the scenes that they can eat between... Dang.

Totally! (After his first gold, I think) one reporter asked him how he was going to prepare for the next race (gee, I wonder? Staying out all night clubbing? Maybe go for a nice, long run? Morons.), and he said "well, I have to get some calories in me *right* now." I think his days in Beijing pretty much consist of eating and sleeping, and occasionally swimming and standing on medals podiums. ;)

Plus drug testing and talking to NBC reporters over and over and over ....

Yes. Please, can we be reminded of that 20 more times until people start to wonder, hm, are they insinuating that he uses performance enhancing drugs? Cuz otherwise, why would they keep bringing it up?

Dude, I totally had no clue he was now in Ann Arbor. I'll have to keep an eye out for him in the future when I go to Maize and Blue (which is just two blocks from where I work). :)

Yep, he trains at U-M. But he says he's moving back to Baltimore once the Olympics are over so he can go back to living closer to his mom, awww.

Aw. That's very coincidental. :-)

We were just talking about this the other day. K started reading off his breakfast menu and all I could think was 'that would be at least a week's worth of breakfasts for me'.

Also, I can't help but hope that all the attention he and his diet are getting will help people finally see that while diet is important, so is EXERCISE.

Hee. Yeah. I'd be hard-pressed to put that amount away in one DAY. Let alone a few hours.

That's an insane amount of food, though I'm not overly surprised. This is why most swimmer put on a ton of weight after they stop swimming.
