Last weekend, I sold my soul to CreationCon and drove several hours to Vancouver, BC, to squee with
annienau08 over Stargate, Sanctuary, and Christopher Heyerdahl's voice.
Day One (Thursday)
Driving. Lots of driving. Then a border guard who was somewhat taken aback by the two hula hoops I had in my backseat. :-)
I managed to make it to the Hilton without incident, despite Vancouver trying to trap me with its weird sometimes right-hand lane/sometimes street-side parking. Thankfully, people were nice and let me in again after I got stuck behind a row of cars. (I'm sorry, Annie, but really, the hotel is on McKay Avenue. Never not funny).
I checked in just minutes ahead of when Annie got to the hotel, and we spent a quite a while talking... long enough to miss Cliff Simon, unfortunately. We did manage to get his autograph, though, and lordy, but that man is attractive. I am a little disappointed we didn't realize soon enough for his talk, because he had a very nice voice. Still, Annie and I were having way too much fun to worry about a silly thing like the actual con. ;-)
We went afterward to get pizza, where I was introduced to the spectacle that is a restaurant in Canada on hockey night. It's actually quite exciting when someone scores a goal. *grins*
Day Two (Friday)
I, adhering to my normal hotel sleeping pattern, woke up at 5:00 am. Yeah. Anyway, I read, went and exercised, read some more, and then when Annie woke up at a nice, respectable hour, we chatted, ate some breakfast, and got ready in time for Andee Frizzell, the Wraith Queen(s). She was hilarious. I guess she tells the same stories at every con, but I found them entertaining, especially the story she told about how she was being shot coming up out of a pool, only her prosthetics were foam and trying to drag her up out of the water prematurely. The prosthetics were on her face, which was funny enough, but she also had a foam bump under her hair... which was tied down to her pants. So she was being dragged upward from her face and her bum.
And then she realized her pants were leather. *g*
Later in the day we saw Colin Cunningham, aka Major Paul Davis. The only thing I wrote down from his talk was that someone asked about his dog, and he said that because he had been out of work, he had to eat something. It was a horrifying and funny moment, funnier because Colin then did his dog impression, which was perfect.
James Bamford, stunt coordinator (aka BamBam). He basically talked about getting the different actors ready for certain stunts, and said that Joe was exaggerating one of his stunt mishap stories.
Then autographs (which I'll cover in the last con day), and then we watched Stargate. I can't remember which episodes we watched which day, but we watched several from seasons four and seven, and eight, including Upgrades, Divide and Conquer (hello, S/J shippers, anyone?), Moebius, and Lost City. We also caught a couple of eps on the TV. Thank you, Canada, for playing Stargate every night. :-)
Day Three (Saturday)
The first part of the day went almost exactly like the first, except I woke up at 6:00 am instead of 5:00 am.
There were three panels we went to, all fun!
Michael Shanks! He was a snarky bastard as usual, and I had a great time listening to him stir the pot by asking about SGU and what people thought about it. He also snarked about Lexa being on twitter... again. It's almost as if he doesn't understand...
Anyway, he was telling this story about a raccoon that's been very (un)helpfully rolling up their new sod each night, and how one night he caught their cat with the raccoon. I tweeted Lexa and asked her if they were good friends, and she said that either they were friends or were plotting against them. :-) Ladies and gentlemen, THAT is why tweeting rocks. *g*
Christopher Heyerdahl, aka Todd the Wraith, was just a pleasure to listen to. So fun, in fact, that both Annie and I ended up buying an autograph ticket, which weren't included in the Preferred weekend package. It was totally worth it just to hear him talking some more. *g*
Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett. They were each supposed to do a bit by themselves and then have the last half-hour on stage together (Can we say McShep fangirls' dream?), and David did go first, but Joe didn't last more than ten or fifteen minutes by himself before David came back out again.
They talked about Stargate some, and David mentioned the movie he's been working on--something about evil snow monkeys? Anyway, they filmed in Bulgaria, and apparently Joe wasn't thrilled about that, so he didn't join up when invited. David then says, "I would have kept you warm," and the entire room was filled with laughter and squeeing.
David mentioned that one of the projects he would like to work on is a show where people take a haunted house and restore it, and that's when the house comes alive and eats the people inside. Or something like that. It would be called "Design of the Dead."
We also saw a vid to this song, which was funny. :-D
Day Four (Sunday)
N. John Smith (Executive Producer Stargate Universe, Atlantis & Sanctuary, co-Executive Producer of SG-1). This was interesting, although the moderator asked most of the questions--not sure why... perhaps they wanted to avoid some of the negative comments about SGU? Regardless, it was an interesting, although not spectacular, panel. He talked a bit about going to the Arctic to film Continuum, and man, but I really need to watch the bonus features on that one. Sound extremely interesting.
Rachel Luttrell (Teyla). In Chicago, she didn't do a solo panel, so we were pretty excited to get to see her by herself, figuring she'd be awesome. She was! She sang for us, and her kid got up on stage with her for a while. He is a VERY cute kid, and it was pretty sweet to see her with him. He definitely wanted to try to help answer the questions.
Rachel talked about having him on set, and how he knew when to keep quiet, and how people on the show were always really supportive. Man. That must be nice.
Also, she is totally gorgeous. *g*
Dan Shea. I was warned about him. Hee. He actually had audience members impersonate him--the man who did the impersonation of one of his stories did a fantastic job, according to Annie. We didn't stay that long. I was getting pretty tired, and Dan Shea seems to suck up all the energy in the room for his own personal use.
Stargate Universe Panel, with David Blue (Eli Wallace), Elyse Levesque (Chloe Armstrong), Mark Burgess (Jeremy Franklin), and Brian J. Smith (Matthew Scott).
This panel was by far the most surprisingly enjoyable panel of the con. I honestly still don't know what, exactly, I feel about SGU, but these four were lovely on the panel--funny, personable, and obviously enjoying themselves, too. They even took photos of the audience, the cuties.
David, Elyse, and Brian are all on twitter, so they talked about that a lot while I found them and added them... they had already thoroughly charmed me by that point.
Brian and David play video games, and Brian is currently playing on on the X-box that he's trying to recruit David for... at which point, he gave out his screen name to the whole audience, looking for additional teammates. Oh, the poor boy... does he have any idea what he got himself into?
They were all asked which other character from Stargate they'd like to be. I only remember David's answer, which was Daniel, because he's like a "super ninja spy." David was constantly playing middleman between the actors and the audience, because he really is a sci-fi geek.
Mark Burgess talked just a little about Joe Mallozzi, saying "When I think about him, I weep." I'm trying to remember the context.
Autographs!
The very last thing we did each day was autographs. You know, I really don't care *that* much about autographs, but I really enjoyed having the opportunity to get them this time around. It was a lot of fun to have that split-second of interaction with the actors. I had quite lovely interactions with everyone-- Chris Heyerdahl told me that it was a "pleasure" when I said thank you, and the Universe people ran REALLY long because they were all writing books on people's photos. Oh, and Brian J. Smith? AMAZINGLY hot in person. WAY hotter than on the show. Like... heart-stoppingly hot. *g* So yeah, I really enjoyed the autographs part. Expensive, maybe, but very fun.
And that was the con! Maybe tomorrow I'll get around to the post-con Vancouver tour of awesome, in which Annie and I traveled to Tollana, P7J-989, NID headquarters, and O'Malley's (which apparently suffered a fire recently), among others. (We also did SOME touristy things unrelated to Stargate, and lazed around in the hotel room a lot, which was really nice.)

And the "When I think about him, I weep" line was because one of the audience members said Joe told her on his blog to ask them all what they thought of him, keeping in mind he was one of the executive producers. :)
Also! We forgot to go to Chapters and look for postcards. I tried to find an appropriate one at the airport, but no such luck. :(

Ooooh. Yes. I remember that question now. Hah hah! Even funnier in context. :-)
Man. I realized we'd forgotten to go, too, but not until later. I did get some nice photos, but it would have been nice to get a couple of postcards, especially considering what I had waiting when I returned.
