So...In the Interest of Humanity, I, Holdouttrout, multishipper and fic-reader of all genres, hereby Announce my desire to compile a listing of that most Rare and Wonderful Gem:
Good Cliche-Fic.
That's right. And to start off with, we're going to find the best examples of...
Aliens Made Them Do It.
Ah, those pesky aliens. Always wanting teh secks. No one quite understands why all alien cultures have a deep-seated need to see our favorite pairings do the deed, but it is a well-documented fact that no respectable alien culture is complete without an obscure law or two requiring copulation. (ETA: This does not mean alien influence, whereby one or more members of the team is influenced in some way by an alien substance. That's another cliche in my opinion).
Most attempts at this particular fan favorite end in tears. Tears of joy on the characters' parts, tears of pain on the part of the readers. But we all know that any cliche, done right, is worth the hours of sifting and struggling as we find that shining example of good, serious, fun, thoughtful, ridiculous, fic.
I'd list my own favorites, but I just scrolled through my list and...nada. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Which means, simply, that I was lame and didn't save them when I read them. Which might be my motive for this post in the first place.
Also, if you have other suggestions for categories (baby fic is already on the list, as is miniOTP/Team), leave them in the comments.
Or, you know, tell me that someone already did this and where I can find it.
:-)

Date: 2007-06-06 03:42 am (UTC)From:What bothers me are how often stories like that have the characters be perfectly fine with what happened and accept it without question or problem. Or have it not affect them.

That being said, it's normally a pretty awful situation.

Date: 2007-06-06 04:25 am (UTC)From:Yes on the silly being acceptable and the ones that deal with consequences/aftermath.
Definitely normally pretty awful. Also...okay, I get that fandom likes porn, but it seems like such a weird idea to be so popular. I mean, I can understand situations where a team member would be raped by an alien (Daniel was raped by Hathor, Sha're by Apophis/Amaunet...there might have been other examples I'm blanking on - I guess sortof Jolinar/the dude on Netu) but it seems odd that aliens would insist the team have sex with each other. But I also don't get the "they got married" convention (I guess SG-1 started that with the "Brief Candle" wedding cake) - though I could imagine cases where pretending to be already married would be useful.
Dunno. Fandom is crazy. I like it that way.

No, you're right, that is 100% exactly why it's so popular. :)

This is a fun idea, can't wait to see what is rec'd! :)

Date: 2007-06-06 04:46 pm (UTC)From:The fic is actually kind of disturbing to read because it's all just very real. But it takes on the cliche and handles it beautifully.

This is why good writers should be recced cross-shipping lines.
I remember "They're Mine." (See! I knew I'd read some good ones!) It's a lot more discreet than other OT3.

Date: 2007-06-06 11:00 pm (UTC)From:And I like her take on Sam NOT being this awful, awful harpy who keeps Jack and Daniel from realizing thier TWU WUV. One of her other het-fics, Actaeon is also a really good "Aliens Made Them Do It" fic which has this beautiful line about Sam reflecting on Daniel seeing this whole thing and understanding how he feels, loving Sha're and wanting Jack and not being able to reconcile these two things.

And in SG-1 (not that you necessarily care), we see Sam/Jack, or Sam/Daniel/Teal'c (which morphs into OT4 later), or two characters who *like* each other. But where's the Sam/Rodney blanket fic? Now I really want some.

And the other two links? Genius! Especially...well, "performers."

I just had to reply to this, because, well, it was just too. funny. And really, really accurate. Someone should do a meta on this. *nudge* ;)
