holdouttrout: (Skeptic)
I've been bored with my regular radio station lately, which has led to all sorts of fun like listening to NPR and feeling smart, or listening to pop music and feeling even smarter.

Most of the time, that is, except for some reason I can't stop myself from listening to songs with catchy beats and really, really terrible lyrics. I'm actually okay with this--fun music is fun!

Most of the time, that is, except that for some reason I can't fathom, I start crying every time I hear "Firework." Yeah, that one. I don't even know. I mean, I recognize the lyrics (Such as "After the hurricane comes a rainbow") are totally insipid, and that the song isn't actually designed to make people cry, but there I am, listening in my car at 7:15 am, and I start getting tight in the chest and my eyes well up, and then I'm making those funny breathing noises people make when they're trying not to cry.

Really.

It's embarrassing.

And now you know and can make appropriate fun of me. *g*

This is not a completely isolated incident, as certain songs tend to do this to me. However, this is certainly the most inappropriate example.

I have a whole little stable of OTT songs that just get to me that are part of my traveling-in-the-car MP3 player. Some of them are just embarrassing and inexplicable when my kids wrinkle their noses. Guess you just hadda been there...

"Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there..."

*Sigh!*

How embarrassing!

Maybe because the music is structured like some clever show tune with uplifting bridges and totally hummable refrains meant to invoke an emotional response? Or maybe it's subliminal messaging, which might be why my kids turns into miniature Justin Bebers in the back seat when that song comes on? There's got to be something to explain why my pair are like human Top-20 Jukeboxes without an 'off' switch. Just last week I had to take a conference call on Mute the whole time because my 3yo was lying under my desk singing that he needed to 'feel like the only girl in the world....na na make me into a girl...' (sad when those are the lyrics that get stuck in my head)

Bwa ha ha! I think the image of your 3yo under the desk singing about wanting to be a girl is just one of the most adorable things ever. If you got video, it's even better. *g*

LOL, I'm crying laughing at the image of L singing *that* song while you are on a conference call. SO CUTE OMG.

lol! Oh god, I hate it when that happens! I always feel teared up when that damn 'I hope you daaaance!' song comes on, because I always imagine some parent singing it who is terminal or something and knows they won't be around for their kid. (I suppose like my friend, S, who died before her kids were 18.) And I always feel manipulated, and the lyrics and music seem so... common denominator. BUT I CAN'T HELP IT!

Hah hah! Yes, there are a few songs that do that same thing to me--it doesn't seem to matter that I know they're cheesy as heck, or that they're designed to manipulate me, either.

I'm just glad I'm not alone.

Aw. I don't know that it's *not* designed to make people cry; have you seen the video? Anyway, I think your response is not that strange. :D

Every once in awhile I'll just get sick of NPR/news/Alternative rock radio and switch to the Seattle dance music station. It's just so carefree and fun! *dances in her living room*

Perhaps you're right. *g*

And I KNOW you're right about dance music being carefree and fun. I'm glad we have the option.
