holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (oops)
I did something.

I told my brother that no, I wasn't kidding about having him help me build a computer, and yes, we should get right on that.

So today I hit "checkout" on many machine bits, which theoretically come together in one mega-machine* called a computer. What have I gotten myself into???

(The most hilarious part is that although I'm deferring to his expertise as to what to buy (which, okay, yes, is part of the fun for people who know more, but I'm taking baby steps, here!), I didn't expect him to be surprised when I said I wanted to be hands-on in the actually building part. He was a little disappointed, I think. Oops. Oh, well. I'm sure he'll still end up doing most of the work.)

That being said, I now need to figure out a name for the as-yet unbuilt machine. Any suggestions?

*Starts thinking about PowerRangers for no reason whatsoever.

Aw, your brother wants all the fun to himself. :P

Naming is the best part. All my machines are named after mythological figures. I have a friend who names hers after death gods. Another named his after dice sizes. What kind of name do you want? (Fandom-y? Mythological? Something else?)

Yes, GLaDOS would have probably been a Bad Idea. (Laptop #1 was named after Tyr, and destroyed it's own hard drive. Laptop #2 was named Erebus and was lost due to a dead video card. I've stopped naming computers after gods whose domains turn out to be prophetic.)

Hm. You could spin off the GLaDOS idea and name it Chell. :P There's also Thor. Or Jarvis! Or, hm, let me think some more.

I'm not sure I really have any good suggestions, but I suggest you avoid HAL 9000, from 2001, A Space Odyssey. That didn't end well.

The Egyptology geek in me suggests forMAAT. Maat was the Egyptian goddess (and principle) of truth and justice. If things were the way they ought to be, then they were "according to Maat".

But then as far as I know, you have never been an Egyptology geek.

What ever you decide, keep us posted as to how it works. My husband was in the act of building his own way back in 1985 when I managed to save up enough to buy him a used original IBM PC, running DOS 2.O, with a pitiful amount of RAM. We still have the antiquated, outdated bits and the newly etched motherboard up in the attic.

Ooh! Let us know how it goes, that sounds exciting (and slightly terrifying).

My machines are boringly named after my most recent fandom crush, and it turns out I change computers about as often as I change fandoms (I'm about due a new one of each). My previous one was Logan, this one is Jack. My iPod is Sam, so sometimes I plug Sam into Jack, heehee. I think you should name your new machine something more interesting, though.

I'm with you and Ultranos on avoiding GLaDOS! *g*

You are very brave. I did the same thing back in college. Very cool experience. My only complaint is that made at home computers have zero tech support. (And the computer builder helper undoubtedly grows tired of helping with tech support far sooner than we like. Lol)

Good luck! Don't electrocute yourself. :)

I'm far more worried about electrocuting the computer than I am myself.

And thankfully, brothers can be convinced to help with promises like "If you do this for me now, you won't have to help me move next time in the future." Or "How about I pay for breakfast this time?" That sort of thing. :-D

I keep saying I'm going to build my next computer. But inevitably I just buy one already put together. I'm pretty sure I could figure out how to put the thing together on my own it's just I can't decide on the parts I want. Well, I can but I can't afford them all at one time, lol.
