Look, my relationship with OAuT has been fraught. After I saw last year's finale I told people very calmly and rationally* that I would not watch the second season, and yet about a month ago, when the first previews started popping up, I knew I'd be back.
I have no good reason. Was it the fact that despite everything I *didn't* like about it (Look, I'm sorry, but Rumpelstiltskin is not my favorite character, and I could honestly do with a lot less of him), it still had tons of amazing female characters with a lot of potential? Probably.
That being said, this first episode of season two has convinced me to give it some more time. I'm not saying I'm completely won over, but I loved much of it, and first seasons are usually a little rough. I'm prepared to cut some slack, is what I'm saying.
Things I loved:
1. Regina being able to feel the magic being back, but not actually able to use it (at first). This led to one amazingly funny moment (hello, mob of angry townspeople!), and one amazingly interesting moment (hello, Emma and Regina hat-twirling!) I saw someone theorize that Emma got magic from killing Maleficent, but I tend to think that it's just Emma herself. I have no observations at hand to back up this theory, though!
2. Henry navigating the fine line between his moms. I think he's more confused than he's letting on. See also Emma's confusion about her parents and what they did.
3. Mulan and Aurora. I like relationships that don't start out easily--and theirs definitely fits that bill. I have to admit, I sort of love that Philip bit the dust right away, both because it subverts the normal female-fridging, and because that means that Aurora and Mulan get to hang out. (I also admit I cried a little inside, because I actually LIKE Prince Philip.)
4. Emma. I like her when she's actively trying to figure things out and horribly confused and/or waving around weapons/fire/hats.
5. Consequences. For Regina, mostly, but also for everyone--no, there isn't an easy answer to everything, you guys!
6. YAY MAGIC.
*For the most part!

Date: 2012-10-02 10:03 pm (UTC)From:2. I think it's going to be even more a mommy/child dynamic this season. Henry did awesome.
3. I love Aurora & Mulan (although, really, she couldn't just feel sibling-esque to Phillip?)
4. Watch Emma be supermagiclady in fairy tale land or something.
5. Yay consequences.
6. Magic...is kinda freaking me out in Storybrooke.
I'll add a 7 (and kinda 8). I like the girl power of the four of them adventuring together.
And, well, I like Gold (not as fond of Rumple). OOOOOH! Hey, do you think dude at the beginning was his son? I just thought of that now and have nothing to base it on.

Date: 2012-10-02 10:22 pm (UTC)From:4. Emma really, really needed a trip to fairy tale land, if only to know beyond a doubt that it's all real. And also to wield more swords.
I do like the girl power thing! Four girl characters all at once!
I certainly thought that maybe it was his son. Time will likely tell! I want to know who his contact is. Clearly someone is keeping him in the loop.
