Writing meta-y fic

I think sometimes, when I start writing in a fandom, I start by writing fic that is almost meta. It's like I'm trying the characters out, seeing how the relationships that I see inside my head comes out on paper.

It's also often wish-fulfillment fic.

Not that this is coming up now for any particular reason or anything.

(As a side note, I sort of wish that it was still that time in my life when I didn't even *think* to look at articles about actors, or see quotes from them, or ridiculously cute set photos. I think that stuff gets in the way of my pure and unadulterated shipping. /grumpy old fan moment)

I find I enjoy something more when I'm oblivious about the actors and all the rest of it too, especially the 'behind-the-scenes' photos. I find that I start looking for the cracks and trying to figure out how they put it all together instead of just enjoying the finished product.

I like the behind-the-scenes stuff to a point, but... yeah. Sometimes it just destroys the magic!

That's my favourite way of reading (and writing) meta. I think some of the most interesting stuff comes out of that initial burst of thought. Once you (generic 'you') start tapping into the fandom hive mind, things change. I do love fanon - I love having that mass brainspace, and the fic tends to be more 'in character' - but it can be hard to write that thing you really want to happen when you've already read half a dozen fics that have done something similar.

Yes! Although right now what I REALLY want to write I want to write partly because I haven't seen it DONE. I want to see it done! I just... can't do it yet, because I don't have enough of a handle on it.
