In 2003, when I was a sophomore in college, I was armed with a sophomoric sense of humor, a CD player/alarm clock combo, an Evanescence CD, and an extremely tolerant roommate.

Our story takes place the morning after a fairly late and loud night. Now, I was in the habit of setting my alarm clock to the quietest possible setting I thought would still wake me up, but because that night was late and loud, I misjudged.

Did I mention I had an early-morning custodial job and got up earlier than my extremely tolerant roommate?

Also, here are some important details:

My alarm clock was across the room from my bed.
My extremely tolerant roommate and I had a bunk bed. I slept on the top bunk.
The first song on Fallen, the debut studio album by the American rock bank Evanescence, is not a timid ballad. The first lyrics are “Now I will tell you what I’ve done for you,” and they’re accusatory and loud.
Although I had an extremely tolerant roommate, I was aware that tolerance only went so far and so I got very good at waking up when the CD player turned on with a little click-whir sound right before my music started playing. And usually my music was fairly soft. Even “Now I will tell you” can be slept through at a low enough volume.

That day, I heard the little click-whir, started getting out of bed, and then…

NOISE OH MY GOD VOLUME OH MY GOD MY ROOMMATE OH MY GOD MY NEIGHBORS!!!

I don’t know exactly how I did it, but somehow I got off the bed, across the room, and stopped that damn CD alarm clock before Amy Lee, the lead singer of the American rock band Evanescence, got out the word “tell.”

My extremely tolerant roommate didn’t even wake up.
