I wasn’t even planning on participating but this popped into my head this morning and I remembered it tonight. So, I wrote it. Prompt: Confessions.

“Regina.” It was a quiet whisper in the dark, barely audible.

“What?” Regina said, groggy, already half-asleep and not sure she’d heard anything at all.

“I have to tell you something.” Emma’s voice was barely above her earlier whisper.

“Can’t it wait until tomorrow?”

There was a long pause, then, “Okay.”

Regina let herself relax, feeling herself drift off, warm and tucked in with Emma behind her. Tomorrow she was going to have to think about that, but tonight she was just going to allow herself to feel good and go to sleep.

Emma shifted and said, “I’m sorry, it can’t wait.”

Regina sighed and turned herself over to face Emma. “What is it?”

She couldn’t see it, but she felt Emma twitch. “You know when I said ‘I know you feel the same way I do’?”

As if Regina could forget. That confession was why they were here, now; it was a very memorable moment. “Yes?”

Another long pause. “It’s just… I didn’t actually finish that sentence. I was going to say 'the same way I do about evil sorcerers hanging out in town,’ but we sort of got interrupted by said evil sorcerer and then you kissed me and I only just realized that you might have thought–”

She trailed off, and Regina took a moment to think through what Emma was telling her and what she wasn’t necessarily trying to say.

Still, she couldn’t help but say, “Oh.”

“I figured, you know, that you should know. I mean, if we’re going to do… this, then I didn’t want you to think something that wasn’t true.”

Regina really wished Emma would stop talking. She was so tired and still half-asleep and it was always a bit difficult to figure out which of the things Emma was saying was most important.

“Regina? Are you mad at me?”

She still didn’t answer, still thinking… and then she had it. “'If we’re going to do this?’”

“…Oh. Yeah.”

“Didn’t we already–”

“I mean, like, not just… this. A relationship.”

“Is that what you want?”

Another twitch. “Is it…do you…?”

And really, Regina asked first, but she also knew what she wanted and she thought it was pretty obvious by now what Emma wanted, so she said, simply, “Yes.”

It was too dark to see Emma’s smile, but Regina felt it.

“I wouldn’t have kissed you if I didn’t want to. Idiot,” she said, entirely too fondly.

Finally, Emma stopped trying to talk and kissed her instead, which as far as Regina was concerned was playing to her strengths and worth encouraging, even at the cost of more sleep.
