holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (Default)
Because the voting ends tonight at midnight (Central), I spent a few hours last night trying valiently to at least make it through the Sam/Jack categories over at the [Poll #1148178][Poll #1148178]

Date: 2008-03-03 07:01 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] vickyocean.livejournal.com
Did you notice that in the Sam/Jack ship category there was one fic labeled 'anti-ship'? I thought that was odd.

I did notice that. I think it's a little, well, I won't say. I want to keep this somewhat neutral. Ish.

I was just wondering. I don't really like to discuss the voting and such, but I was sort of curious if it struck anyone else too. : )

why would you think slash might be the biggest category??

I'm not sure. The best I can think is that there's such a large slash presence--and there seems to be a lot more slash in SG-1/SGA fic than there was in my old fandom. And I tend to *read* it, which is new for me, too.

Believe it or not, I actually voted in 53(!) different categories - and that's sticking strictly to SG-1 and the gen categories! I did it over a two-week period, I think - a few sections at a time. To be honest, I had a lot of fun with the multimedia sections. We're not allowed to campaign, so I'm waiting until tomorrow to point to one seriously funny item.

Go, you! I didn't even attempt to hit the multimedia sections, because I wanted to stick to what I knew best.

But surely it's all subjective? For example, five or six drawings of Sam or Teal'c or Jack or Daniel - I just picked the one I liked most. Same with icons and wallpapers. I don't have to be an artist myself to appreciate art in others.

Try the art sections in multimedia. It doesn't take long to look through icons and the like.

I wasn't trying to scold you, really! :) I just wanted to point out that there's a lot more to multimedia than music vids, which demand a lot of time - first to download, and then to watch. Icons, OTOH, take only seconds to compare and decide.

I do think the SFA is a little too big to have a real impact, but more kudos to them for encompassing the entire fandom. Must be pretty exhausting... :)

I had a lot of problems with the voting part of the website, so I did all my voting in two, giant sessions.

I voted 18 times, including graphics. Personally, I had ten nominations that I kept, and a half-dozen that I deleted, so I had ten fics in the contest. I voted for myself twice, against myself once, and not at all in the other 7 categories in which I was nommed. I basically ran out of time, between not being able to log in at SGFA and then being sick.

I only vote if I have read the category in its entirety, and I always vote for the fic with the best writing, character voice, and plot. I try very hard not to let -- for example -- my hatred for apocafic interfere.

Anyway, as for this contest, I think it would benefit greatly from not being so giant. It tries to cover too much, and I'm amazed they manage to hold it at all. Also, if they're going to have 297 categories, then perhaps they shouldn't limit individual authors to 10 entries. Lots of good stuff gets flushed that way, and I'm not talking about the stuff I deleted from my nominations, but rather about things I nominated and didn't see entered.

ext_2131: picture of a fish with lots of green (Default)
Yeah. Limiting the entries can be annoying, but I can understand why they do it.

When you say you read the category in its entirety, do you mean you read *every* word of it? Or do you mean you read enough to know if you would or wouldn't vote for it?

Date: 2008-03-03 09:17 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] spiletta42.livejournal.com
In most cases, every bloody word of it. Although if I hit my limit on wild abuse of grammar and outright bizarre characterization, I bailed. I can only take so much in the name of sportsmanship.

I find the whole awards system very interesting. I hope no one thinks I'm sitting here compiling a "good fan; bad fan" list. ;-)

Date: 2008-03-03 08:30 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] rolleson.livejournal.com
Interesting in what way. I've never had any involvement with it before, either though nominating or otherwise.

And hmmmmm because I'm not sure how exactly to word my mouthing off. And I probably shouldn't.

Interesting as in curious. It's curious that we *do* it, and curious that we have so many categories, and curious what people nominated and vote for.

And because I just wanted to know how other people approached it.

Date: 2008-03-03 09:21 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] rolleson.livejournal.com
I'm not sure how I feel about it. The whole voting system caused me anxiety and I have a few problems with the whole system. But then I step back and breathe and remind myself, that to me, it's really not that important and I shouldn't be getting stressed over it.

Yeah. I agree about taking a step back. It seems SO important, but really, it's just one year of awards...in fandom. *grins*

Date: 2008-03-03 09:22 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] spiletta42.livejournal.com
I had a list of fifty-odd things, collected throughout the year, that I nominated. Most of them did not show up in the awards, or at least I can't seem to find them. I'm assuming this is because the individual received more than ten noms and opted to keep noms for other works, which when we include two different shows, graphics, vids, art, and fic, het and gen and slash, really adds up to a whole lot of good stuff being cut.

Date: 2008-03-03 09:34 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] phdelicious.livejournal.com
I'm actually very wary of fanfic awards because a lot of what I've seen looks pretty haphazard and there's such a huge potential for BAD things. I rarely nominate people or vote.

These look to be run better than most, but honestly it's pretty much the same authors and the same stories (even) year after year.

ext_2131: picture of a fish with lots of green (Default)
I do know of fandoms where entries are limited to stories posted *that* year. It seems like a good idea, but I'm sure there are all sorts of logistical problems with it.

Date: 2008-03-03 11:49 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] phdelicious.livejournal.com
I'm not sure how it would really be that much harder since don't they already have to verify links to the stories and pretty much everything has a date stamp these days. But whatever.

Thanks for reminding me that I've been meaning to vote in those things!

I....vote very haphazardly. I go through likely categories and see if I recognize any fics and if I think the ones I recognize are award worthy. If it's a category I don't really care about and nothing catches my eye, I move on.

If I decide to vote, and the fic that drew me isn't already "OMG bestest fic ever" in my head (this happened...3 times I think) I'll then click on all the stories and...rarely read very far in. I'm very picky with these things so if the fic doesn't quickly start working - if there's something stylistically I don't like ("Danny" or "the blonde major looked at the brunette doctor" or something RANDOM) I'll click off. If it works, I keep going.

I think I just don't take them seriously enough :)

I found that if I'd normall back out of a fic without reading it, I definitely wouldn't vote for it. ;-)

And I definitely had no problem picking certain categories.

I'm a bit of a bad fangirl when it comes to these awards things :P

I voted for mah friends! Although it has to be said that all of you are fabulicous writers and I had no qualms ticking that box - hehee! And I did struggle through some of the most atrocious mischaracterised crap that made me back button in a hurry when it just became too much for my delicate sensibilities.

As I said to someone above, I'm not compiling a list of bad/good fangirls. However, since you mentioned it... *scribbles name down*

*grins*

I did give every category a good look-see, just in case there was a fantabulous writer stashed away in there somehow. (There weren't.)

Phew. I'm so glad you mentioned it. Went and voted for as much as I could get done.

I perhaps didn't read as thoroughly as I could have done, but I feel that, if it's a story that instantly turns me off for whatever reason (bad spelling, poor grammar, rampant cliches...), I don't need to look much further - unless every story in the category was around the same level of badly-writtenness. Which didn't happen.

Writing ability is not the only reason I'd want a story to win the award, but it's certainly a part of it. I think of it like a way of doing first-round eliminations. After that, it was down to what I considered better for less quantifiable reasons.

I do find it a bit weird that it's not stories released during just one year - but, you know, that's how they've chosen to do it, and it looks like a hell of a lot of work, so more power to them. How much value I choose to put on the awards - how much I use them as guidance to whether I'd actually want to read something - is entirely down to me.

I totally forgot until someone mentioned it the day before yesterday.

Yeah. I'm a little less concerned about 100% proper grammar and spelling (although they REALLY help me keep reading) than I am about cliches and basic ability to tell a story. But even with my standards, I still clicked back pretty quickly.

Do people vote for themselves? I thought that was against the rules. (Damn! There's one potential vote down the drain!)

And I like the Fan Fiction awards, because I have to guiltily confess that I don't actually read that much fan fiction, and I can't stand stuff that's not well written, so I often dip into the award winner archives if I'm looking for something to read.

Also, I'm a fairly new fan fiction writer and not anywhere near as prolific as some, so I was very happy to get a nom because I hope it will help more readers find my stories.

I think few people vote for themselves, according to the poll. And one vote shouldn't matter *too* much.

I was basically just curious to see how other people responded to the awards. These are my first ones, really, so it was exciting!
