holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (Pride_Prejudice)
I have an unhealthy obsession with 1) green and 2) Pride and Prejudice. I, along with every girl in the known world, love Mr. Darcy, although since he is also an INTJ, it's probably not a good idea to think about marrying him. Anyway, I own the soundtrack to the new version, own the new version as well as the BBC version. I have much love for BOTH of them, for varying reasons, which I could enumerate at great length.

The shorter version usually ends up in my DVD player, because I can finish it more quickly, but this week I decided to have a nice, long, P&P marathon. Hello, Colin Firth!

HOWEVER, whilst watching it through this time, I was struck by the friendship between Elizabeth and Charlotte. I have a HUGE weakness for literature where women have friends and not just love interests, and I adore the relationship between Lizzie and Charlotte. They are so different from each other, but they have a really rich history of friendship. And the BBC version really brings that out in small glances and smiles.

So Lizzie's going to visit Charlotte and Mr. Collins. As soon as she steps down from the carriage, Mr. Collins starts in with his smug snobbery, and everyone exchanges pleasantries. Everyone except Charlotte and Lizzie. They just look at each other, so glad to be together again, and that one moment encompasses a whole conversation of worry and reassurances. It's amazing!

And then, of course, I realized you could slash them*. :-P

SRSLY, PEOPLE. FANDOM HAS RUINED ME.

In other, funner news, [livejournal.com profile] rigel_7 made pic!fic trampoline pr0n! It's actually work-safe, as long as you don't mind little SP Cams running around half-naked. *grins* The Fannish Requisition, which is just about the best title EVAR!

*No, seriously! They're like...best friends! They have sleepovers and take long walks and then kiss each other! But they still have to get married because they are poor. Woe!

Oh dear. *eyes you*

I maintain that the BBC version is THE perfect thing to watch when you're sick. Six hours of goodness! I love both versions too - probably BBC a little more because of wet!shirt scene (and I think it was better cast overall). But the KN one has that field scene.

Now I want to go read Christi's SG/Jane Austen x-over fics...

I never said it wasn't wrong!

Oh, man. Do I have time to re-read the x-overs today? Wait! When is there NOT time to re-read those.

Hmmm...

I love that scene! I just adore that quiet thread of emotion against all the other noise. Except now I will never look at it the same way again, lol.

When Preschool Girl was younger (a year or so ago?) she used to be willing to sit with me and watch parts of P&P or S&S - I think she liked the pretty dresses or something. Maybe the horses. Anyway, I always died laughing when we got to the part where Darcy and Elizabeth meet at Pemberley (the BBC version), because she would get SO EXCITED. Shipping is genetic.

There are several moments like that in the film, too, and to me it's just absolutely perfect--a moment of connection among the false conversation or standards of the society. Lovely!

And that scene! Darcy's all wet, and Lizzie is just horrified, but happy, and they have the most perfect stilted conversation ever!

*loves*

Haha! You have been CORRUPTED, OMG! *g*

I love the BBC version, because it's spread over six hours, so they have the luxury of time to spend on details like Charlotte and Lizzy's friendship. I love the silent details about Charlotte's life with Mr. Collins and the horrible Lady Whatsername. That was really the preferable option to being unmarried? Yergh. Thank god for progress.

It's funny, I found reading that nearly unbearable (and the bits with Lizzy's mother, who is SO ANNOYING), but in the BBC version, I could find it entertaining.

I know! Oh, fandom.

Can you imagine being Charlotte? You know your parents love you, but they're very traditional, and every time anyone looks at you, you know they might be thinking what a pity it is you're plain and couldn't get a husband. And if you *don't* marry, then you'll end up alone, caring for your sisters' children, or tucked away with various relatives for your entire life.

I think I just convinced myself to marry Mr. Collins. *shudders*

I saw Emma, with Ms. Paltrow, and then tried to read the book. A mistake. Then I tried to read Pride and Prejudice and couldn't make it through. BUT! Once I saw the 6-hour one, I was able to capture the spirit of the characters from the start, and LOVED the book. And then I pretty much devoured the rest of Austen's books. Including Emma. which is LONG.

Ugh, what a choice. I guess she has more independence as Mrs. Collins, and possibly she can shape him into something more bearable (it seems like she's trying to do that), but... wow.

I love Emma, but it took me two attempts to get through it (she's a royal pain in the butt for so much of it). It makes getting to the best bits all the more rewarding, though. *g*

I, er...may have done some lit crit and referenced Emma for some of it. I believe Austen was worried about Emma because the heroine was so much of a spoiled pain for so much of the book. Of course, it all worked out all right, but she's definitely not my favorite heroine (that would be Elizabeth), but I love the book for all the characters, and the silliness, and the ending more than anything.

I think you and I are green soul mates. Today I have on a kelly green cardigan, a camisole top with little green and yellow flowers, gReen enameled earrings AND crazy kelly green eyeshadow. ; )

Anyway back on topic, P&P. The BBC miniseries is the definitive version for me. I must say I despise the new movie version. It was one of the only two movies I've ever walked out of the theatre on. In part, it's that I really don't care for Kiera Knightly at all. I really didn't care for the guy that played Darcy either. He seemed very bland and without the repressed smoldering intensity of Colin Firth. I didn't much care for some of the tweeks they did to the story either. If I have to pick a movie version I'd definitely pick the 1940 version with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier.

I always liked Charlotte. She always came off as a little more worldly and perceptive than Elizabeth. I enjoy seeing how skillfully she maneuvers Mr. Collins into doing what she wants him to do. Though he might not realize it she is the one in charge. I've thought that Charlotte would likely be able to tolerate(and ignore him) fairly easily, because he is quite similar in temperament and propensity to ramble on and say embarrassing things as her father. I think Lizzy might have ended up murdering him if she had been forced to marry him.

I haven't seen the 1940's version yet. I'll have to pick it up.

Elizabeth with Mr. Collins would have been a disaster! It would have been her parents in reverse. Oh, my goodness. Although really, I think Lady Catherine will miss her, just a bit.

The 1940s version is lovely! Nothing much like the book or the BBC version, but that's what I love about it. :)

"Although really, I think Lady Catherine will miss her, just a bit."

But she can always visit them at Pemberley. ; ) Lady Catherine and Mrs. Bennet visiting at the same time, wouldn't that be hell?

I go through fazes of devouring P&P fanfic. I'm sorta coming off of one now. I love all the 'what if's' possible in the book. There are some many forks in the road that could have changed to story drastically.

It's very true. Any one of a thousand things could have gone very differently.

Lady Catherine and Mrs. Bennet in the same place at the same time...
...
...

Oh, my.

It's like the exact opposite of having Jacob and Bra'tac in one place at the same time. :D

Been away for a few days, and missed replying to this. But I just have to say, concerning Elizabeth/Charlotte -- it was one of my [livejournal.com profile] femslash08 requests. Because yes.

I adore the way they captured the relationship in the BBC version. And I think they're incredibly slashable. You're not the only one!

Woot! Everyone else reacted with a bit of horror, so I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.
