holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (Tealc/Vala)
I was going to do one big post with the three ficlets I'd written for the porn battle and then a couple of links, but the links got unmanageable, so I figured I'd better split them up.

First, [livejournal.com profile] _minxy_, who ran [livejournal.com profile] gateverse_remix this year (and did an excellent job, too), wrote a remix for ME. It is, of course, fabulous. Without Fear of Wind or Vertigo (The Joker's Wild remix), a remix of Jester's Silence, which is Teal'c and Vala prank wars during 'Unending.' Minxy does a fabulous job of fleshing out Vala and her reactions to the situation, in a way that made me ache for her and the others.

I still need to read the large majority of stories from the remix, and I hope to get to them soon.

Girls are as good at math as boys!.

The researchers found no difference in the scores of boys versus girls -- not even in high school. Studies 20 years ago showed girls and boys did equally well on math in elementary school, but girls fell behind in high school.

This study and article makes me smile. I've always known that, but now the research shows it. The Onion has a nice companion piece. I love humor that makes its point effectively in a very brief space.

This entry, about personalized cell phone rings, made me laugh until I cried. This is especially awesome for the church-going among you.

Isn't that like the bestest story ever? I love her entries, because she always sneaks you into thinking the punchline can't possibly be any better than the rest of the story, and then she gets you.

It's wonderful to get that kind of confirmation.

"Girls are as good at math as boys!"

The average is the same-- but I'd be curious about the distribution.

You think there are more girls on either end of the spectrum, or more boys?

What I've read about intelligence tests, at least, says that the average is the same (or close to) but that the male curve tends to be wider, and there are more men at the extremes. I wonder if that's reflected in this study.

Where's the abstinence icon, omg?!? =) That was hilarious.

Yay for new math studies. I had a (male) friend in grad school that was of the 'girls are not wired for math and science' persuasion. I say friend because he was, but ... argh. I needed this sort of evidence then.

It's so true--I should've used the icon.

I've never believed that girls can't do math or science, and it makes me mad when girls who happen to not be good at one or the other uses it to prove the point.

Bleh.

But Teal'c and Vala were more appropriate, with the fic and all. And so pretty.

Well, that's why I picked it. Although a chance to use the abstinence icon? Never should be wasted.

Except now, 'cause I'm too lazy to reply from the website. *g*

The math thing is very interesting. Makes me wonder if the old study was, somehow, different, or if girls are less ... "repressed"(?) these days and their inherent mathematical abilities shine through in high school or something. I would love to know. Because things have changed over time.

And the ringtone. The ringtone! That is so funny! :^D

I hope it's just that the average has evened out--that girls no longer think it's weird to be good at math.
