Also: Jack is so incredibly emo...and yet somehow, I still like him. I think, despite the fact we the audience knew Jack was doing the wrong thing, he did right by what he knew at the time.
And I, for one, can handle extreme game-changing events, as long as the series continues to be awesome.
I think Lost rebounded toward the end of this season, or rather, I think the propensity for game-changing finales, which have the effect of alienating every viewer who watches in some way or another, make for slower, less-impact-dealing first halves of the seasons.
I do, however, think that the next season could really rock--they've essentially give their characters more history to work with, so filling in the previous 'however long' could really hearken back to first season.
It'll be interesting, whatever happens.
(And I'll totally squee over Jack/Kate angst...they've totally worked themselves into my favorite kind guilty pleasure couple--the ones that get all soulful and angsty
