I woke up at dark o'clock this morning to the sound of buzzing.
Not an alarm kind of buzzing, either. No, this was an indeterminate kind of buzzing, and it sounded like it was either right outside my wall, or inside my wall.
Because this is me (the girl who once thought a low battery beeping from a phone was obviously a BOMB planted in her packed college boxes--hey, I had just spent most of the night watching Alias), I didn't imagine anything small. Or, at least, not just one small thing.
Skip past the next paragraph if bugs creep you out.
No, I imagined a hoarde of tiny little termites, wings buzzing, about to break through the wall and crawl over my face, burrowing into my blankets. Or a big wasp, stinger pointed right at my eye.
It's safe to look now.
The other image the sound brought to mind was a phone, happily vibrating away in my sock drawer.
After a few not-so-hilarious antics, I finally did find the source of the noise--a BIG, SCARY (almost dead) BUG. WITH WINGS. I put it out of its misery, shuddered, and went back to sleep.
