First and most importantly, a happy birthday to
pepper_field! I hope it is a fabulous one.
Sanctuary:
Okay, I love and adore Sanctuary--more precisely, I love and adore Helen Magnus, and most of the other main or recurring characters. However! I have noticed that the number of plot holes in Sanctuary episodes surpasses that of many other shows, and it's driving me up the WALL. I don't need Sanctuary to be a brilliant, smart show. It's enough for me when Helen runs around kicking ass or giving the kids time outs, or goes crazy under the influence of a beetle she took on purpose. I mean, I'm not difficult to please, people!
However! I would like to appeal to the writers and say "Please, please, please add another draft to your writing process. You know, one where you go through and take out most of the remaining stupid."
For example, in 'One Night,' the episode could have been improved dramatically if, instead of Will telling Abby to escape using the scorpion, and then her being REMARKABLY stupid in not actually contacting help, he had told her NOT to escape, and they'd used the scorpion later.
I mean, I get Will was trying to help Abby get away, at least, but REALLY!
In 'Pax Romana' there were just things that didn't make sense, albeit subtly, but I felt like the episode really should have been two episodes, or some of the episode (Adam, probably) should have been dropped. It kinda seemed like TPTB thought Adam wasn't interesting enough after all, and yet had to finish up his storyline, so... they kinda got stuck with it. (On the other hand, I have nothing but love for the all-female Action Team.)
'Hangover' wasn't an ep that needed to be smart--in fact, I figured it wouldn't be--but they tried to have it both ways with the ending: the "funny, pull the wool over the eyes of the UN" ending and the "we occasionally screw up but we're still valuable and intelligent" ending. I enjoyed pretty much the whole episode (Although Will needs to understand that sometimes friends shoot friends), but the ending made it just a little sour.
It just makes me want to duct-tape the writers to their chairs and make them read the script out loud.
None of it is making me give up the show, or stop enjoying fun moments like Big Guy swinging upside down in an elevator. *g*
SGU, on the other hand, is making me wish it weren't canceled. These last few eps have been engaging--still darker than SG-1, but with some levity, and I feel like I finally have a good grasp of most of the characters. I haven't even wanted to throw Young OR Rush out an airlock recently! It's a marked improvement. :-)
(SGU, btw, is why I haven't started my Rewatch of SG-1 season two. I had six episodes to catch up on.)
Meme! I haven't done one of these in a while! Snagged from

Date: 2011-04-27 08:42 pm (UTC)From:The whole "Abby is too dumb to escape or contact the Sanctuary" thing DROVE ME INSANE, because aside from that, she did a not bad job for her first "kidnapped by insane yet weakly named gangsters" experience.
I also really, really liked the part where Sioux (I don't know if that was actually her name) had An Actual Plan And A Reason for kidnapping Will in the first place. And then she got shot, which was dumb.
Hangover just...THE ENDING BUGGED ME SO MUCH.

Sanctuary (or Tortall, because now I'm curious).

Date: 2011-04-27 09:09 pm (UTC)From:Well, if I did Tortall, it would pretty much be identical to yours (http://grav-ity.livejournal.com/1298901.html?thread=5843157#t5843157). Except for Alanna/Liam, because I don't remember it well enough to put it in there. *needs to re-read*
So... Sanctuary.
One True Pairing Ship: Helen/John. Because. Well. Epic! (And totally messed up.)
Favorite Canon Ship: Helen/John. (Also a canon shipper, and I'm not sure my brilliant plan to not copy your answers is working.)
"If this happens I'll stab my eyes out with a spork" Ship: I would have said Kate/Will until just a couple episodes ago, but now I think it could work in a Ron/Hermione disfunctional kind of way. Or at least be interesting as it blew up around them.
"You are one sick bastard" Ship: Helen/Henry. I don't think that works, no.
"I dabble a little" Ship: Will/Henry. Or James/Declan.
"It's like a car crash" Ship: Helen/Nikola! I love their snark. And the late-night talks, and their reliance on each other, and... oh, everything.
"Tickles my fancy but not sold just yet" Ship: Kate/Henry--I thought I'd ship them at one point, but haven't seen enough evidence yet.
"Makes no canon sense but why the Hell not" Ship: Is there a Sanctuary pairing that makes no sense? OH WAIT. Kate/Ashley.
"Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" Ship: Um. Uhhhh. I'm at a loss. There are pairings I don't want in canon, but like perfectly well in fic (Helen/Will, Helen/Henry (except I'm not that crazy for fic about Helen/Henry, either.)).

Date: 2011-04-27 09:18 pm (UTC)From:And yeah, it's the Almost-Mother thing that bothers me with Helen/Henry.
I have to admit that I'd love a really well-done Helen/Kate fic... but I'm not sure how that would look or work or come to pass, so I haven't written it yet.

Date: 2011-04-27 09:20 pm (UTC)From:I also can't ship Helen/Will because, in addition to how awesome she is, there was that shot in the pilot where she's holding him as an eight-year-old and I...can't.
I hear you on the Helen/Kate. I started a comm just to promote them (haven't had any time to promote it yet, but it's on my list!), and now I just need to attract *coughs* the right element to do the writing. ;)

Date: 2011-04-30 05:16 pm (UTC)From:I didn't mind 'Hangover' - it was fluffy, and I watched it for the fluff, and enjoyed it for that, but 'One Night'? Really, I think my major problem was the lack of Magnus (and I know Amanda was directing, but I just don't get the same thrill from Will'.) Also, Abby coming back - wtf? Like, if you're going to come back, take the scorpion back with you! Or call someone on your way! She works for the FBI, and apparently has had some training... think!!!
Also, is Will is psychiatrist - which is what they called him in this episode - or a psychologist? Because if he's the former, he went through medical school and residency, and he should know how to manage a patient who's od'd and is seizing (and it's NOT with epinephrine, FFS, as a quick google search would tell you). And if he's a psychologist, well, 'pre-med' education doesn't exactly cover medical care in first aid scenarios. I just... eugh... unconscious patient in front of you: is their airway obstructed? are they breathing? do they have a pulse? Check their vital signs! Get an IV going! Don't talk about your relationship!
I want to squee again... :(
