It is now time, once again, for our weekly foray into the wonderful world of cliche fic--those tried and true excuses to get our OTP to stop being stupid and admit they like/love/want to do each other, already!
This week, we're going straight for cliche-gold:
Stranded!
A 'gate/ship/communications malfunction, evil manipulation by friends/enemies/aliens, or just plain bad luck ends up stranding our favorite characters on another planet/country/time/alternate universe with little to no hope of ever being rescued. And of course, as a result, all the rules change.
One of my personal favorites is "And These Valleys Unknown" by
nandamai
A great look at Sam/Jack realistic stranded fic. One of the absolute best...but then, it's Nanda.
There's another one I really like, that's Sam/Pete, Sam/Jack, with Pete off-world, too...but I can't find it. So if you put that one in the comments, you're my personal hero for the day. :-)
ETA: Annerb helpfully supplied the link to
surrealphantast 's "Bird Stealing Bread."
Remember: We're looking for the *best* fics--fics that you enjoy, bookmark, and come back to, time and time again. All pairings welcome.

I totally hadn't seen it before...and it's even illustrated.

Date: 2007-06-20 11:20 pm (UTC)From:You know, I have a problem with this recs thing. Initially I think, "Ooh, what a lovely cliche! I must know lots of fic with this!", and then I go look through the fic I've saved/bookmarked... and then I start reading it... and reading it... And, several hours later, I've forgotten all about finding the fic I was initially vaguely looking for. *g*
Fun, though.

Date: 2007-06-21 04:42 am (UTC)From:I have no idea if I've read the one you mentioned...oh, yes, yes I have. What a lovely fic...without the standard rescued ending. Oh, I'm so glad you mentioned this, 'cause I didn't have it bookmarked. And now I do.

And I know I've read a coupla really neat OT3 takes on the cliche. I'll have to see if I can dig them up.
Aha!
Date: 2007-06-21 02:16 pm (UTC)From:Princess of Geekland's How We Laugh The Day Away which is a lovely, light-hearted take on the whole cliche.
And sadly, I can't seem to find the link to Wheel, but it's the one that got me into OT3 in the first place because it's just an amazing team-love piece. Anyone know where it's moved to?

"How We Laugh the Day Away" is very lovely--perfectly added one pairing after another and then all of them together. I hadn't seen it before, and I'm glad you mentioned it. :-D

Date: 2007-06-21 02:22 pm (UTC)From:Does Moebius fic count?
... and none of those are really the shipper cliché, are they? Weird. I thought I had a lot of OT3 ones but it turns out they're all apocafic.

Date: 2007-06-21 02:33 pm (UTC)From:Moebius fic certainly counts! Alternate Timeline/Stranded in Tiiiiime.
Oh! I love "West!" I'm pretty sure I haven't seen "Mnemophobia," but from the two paragraphs I've read, it looks interesting.
I *know* there's a fic that's kinda sorta anti-Sam/Jack...like Daniel manipulates them in the initial situation so they can be together, but it just doesn't work out.
It really bugged me at the time, because I was on that initial Sam/Jack kick and I was frustrated that somebody so talented wasn't writing ship and giving me my happy ending, damn it. Can't remember for the life of me what it was.

Oh! And, random sidenote--I was on your site looking up that fic, and got distracted...I don't think I'd ever read "Matrix" fic before. :-) (I also might have stopped by the X-Files page, too.)

I know you have some great recs for this cliche.
I'm not so sure of that. I don't bookmark the bad ones in case anybody should ever invade my computer and think less of me for my guilty pleasure. *g*

Oh dear. ;)
I think I'm going to post in my lj begging for more stranded recs, as you've now got me in the mood, you evil thing.

Date: 2007-06-21 07:26 pm (UTC)From:I bookmark them (well, I do now that's I've gotten smarter and know I'll want almost every fic again at one point or another) on del.icio.us, but if I'm really embarrassed by them, I mark them as private. Although, if one were to use my home computer, they'd be visible, anyway. :-)

Yes! Do eeet! And then I can mooch off your flist, too. *grins wickedly*
(Old fandoms are the best, aren't they?)

Date: 2007-06-22 11:56 am (UTC)From:Okay, but you should share the embarrassing stranded ones with ME. *g*
When I started reading SPN fic last summer, I too got smart and did the del.icio.us thing. It only took me a zillion years in fandom to figure out that I'd want to have links to everything remotely readable.

Date: 2007-06-22 03:07 pm (UTC)From:Well, that's why I'm doing this. :-) And stranded fics really got left out of my del.icio.us.
(Mostly it's the PWP stuff I make private...sometimes, and then I usually uncheck the box later).

Date: 2007-06-22 08:29 am (UTC)From:Hi, got here via sg1_debrief, hope you don't mind me jumping in :) Ah, stranded fic - my fave type of cliche fic. Second only to the old chestnut of 'one half of your OTP is missing/imprisoned and it's all up to the other half of your OTP to find/free them'...
Anyhow, fic recs. All SJ, all rather long:
'What will it take?' by SG1_Fanfic:
http://sgnovels.shahrazad.net/storiesw/whatwillittake.txt
- Jack under alien influence kidnaps Sam and strands them offworld.
'Thyself, Unknown' by Missanthropic:
http://sgnovels.shahrazad.net/storiest/thyselfunknown.txt
- Beneath the Surface AU.
And finally, the aptly named, 'Stranded' by Divine Joker:
http://sgnovels.shahrazad.net/storiess/stranded-divinejoker.txt
- Um yeah. Does exactly what it says on the tin; Several SG teams get stranded offworld and this is how things turn out.
Have fun!
