holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (Default)

It is now time, once again, for our weekly foray into the wonderful world of cliche fic--those tried and true excuses to get our OTP to stop being stupid and admit they like/love/want to do each other, already!

This week, we're going straight for cliche-gold:

Stranded!

A 'gate/ship/communications malfunction, evil manipulation by friends/enemies/aliens, or just plain bad luck ends up stranding our favorite characters on another planet/country/time/alternate universe with little to no hope of ever being rescued. And of course, as a result, all the rules change.

One of my personal favorites is "And These Valleys Unknown" by [personal profile] nandamai
A great look at Sam/Jack realistic stranded fic. One of the absolute best...but then, it's Nanda.

There's another one I really like, that's Sam/Pete, Sam/Jack, with Pete off-world, too...but I can't find it. So if you put that one in the comments, you're my personal hero for the day. :-)

ETA: Annerb helpfully supplied the link to [profile] surrealphantast 's "Bird Stealing Bread."

Remember: We're looking for the *best* fics--fics that you enjoy, bookmark, and come back to, time and time again. All pairings welcome.

I think the story you're thinking of is Something Like Chutney by Tallulah Rasa. I'm sorry I don't know how to do links, but you can probably google her name and the story title and find it. It is an unsettling look at how things might really be or turn out for S/J if stranded in this situation. If you try it, be sure to read to the end, where you find links for a sequel (which makes you feel marginally better about poor Jack, and Sam, too) and also for the author's explanation of her story, which I found enlightening. It had to do with her own age and life perspective (my age is close to RDA/Jack's age, so I can understand her points), the ages of the characters, and what she thought would be realistic. It's well worth reading.
