holdouttrout: not your ordinary fish (Default)
I probably will have pictures to post later on, but I wanted to get this put up ASAP, so Splash can be lazy and link to it, and besides most of my pics this year are costume pics and not all that interesting to people who really don't care about those that much.

I have it broken out by day below. Day one is Thursday, which is when I left. :-)

Day One: THIS IS MARTAAAAA!!!

Flying when I'm *supposed* to be awake is genius, since I confirmed last year that I can't sleep on planes at all, even overnight. It goes so much faster when I'm not thinking about how tired I am and can instead read A Matter of Honor, and wonder about whether the guy next to me is writing a very very long "I'm a bastard, sorry," note or "I'm a bastard and am leaving you, sorry," note.

I *think* that's close, although I really only read about a paragraph before I 1) realized that that was slightly creepy and awful and 2) decided I really didn't want to know.

I spent the time I wasn't reading on the flight playing in-flight trivia, and wondering about Sam/Jack telepathy bonds.

After the airport, I went straight to MARTA, and met a nice woman from England who was there, as she said, "mainly to see James Marsters." She was really nice, and I felt bad I didn't get her name.

Basically, the rest of Thursday night was meeting up with [livejournal.com profile] splash_the_cat, [livejournal.com profile] vickyocean, and [livejournal.com profile] besyd. We discussed Tony Stark, I managed to not avoid talking about my own fic, and kept embarrassing myself. Awesome. :-) (To be fair, no one else seemed to mind, and it was going to become a recurring theme for the weekend.)

Day Two: Let the Con Begin

After waking up incredibly freaking early, Splash and I ended up at the James Marsters panel by mistake. But what a mistake! He was funny, smart, and good-humored about all the con-questions, too. He answered--or rather, avoided answering--a question about whether Sarah Michelle Gellar or John Barrowman was the better kisser. Basically, he said that snogging on camera is really never sexy or fun, and that Sarah was like his kid sister. *grins*

After that I dashed off to a YA myths and fables panel, mostly because Tamora Pierce was on it. It was okay, although I didn't really enjoy the way the moderator led the panel. I think she was really nervous about her role.

Then I had to dash right back through the two hotels for the Stargate Megapanel. It's the only one I actually made it to all weekend, and it was pretty fun, although it had nothing on last year. Cliff Simon said nothing that wasn't an innuendo of some sort, and Torri Higginson wasn't much better, either. And yes, there were ponies. Everyone handled them well, though--Cliff Simon had even made one for the auction, which sounded dorky but kind of cool.

You know, con time is weird. The panels start every hour and a half, and last for an hour, so you have time to get to the next one. And it just seems like the day FLIES by. After the panel, I'm pretty sure we ate dinner and changed into the CONFIRMATION shirts to go meet up with the other Stargate peeps. Man! There were a lot of people--I didn't catch all their names, even, but everyone seemed really awesome and I ended up ever so slightly tipsy. People came and went for a couple of hours, but eventually the people who were still there decided it was time for food. The Sheraton cafe was open 24 hours, and there was Star Trek playing in the background, so that was fun and dorky enough for me. :)

Day Three: Saturday the Crowded

Splash and I both made it to the parade this time around. Wow! I'm sorry I missed it last year. It was a lot of fun. I should, I think, have pictures later on. There were several Santa Clauses, which I think confused the little girl sitting in front of us. Poor children.

Up next was a Torchwood panel. I'd only seen the first two discs, but I wasn't too lost. Gareth David Lloyd, James Marsters, and Anthony Lewis were awesome--they addressed the way the show confronts homophobia, talked about President Bush, and gave some more details about boy-kissing. *g*

I once again dashed through the crowds (OMG THE CROWDS) to see Tamora Pierce for her solo panel, which was great. She said that her favorite book was always the one she'd just finished, but that if she had to pick a non-writerly answer, she'd choose Squire or Shattered Glass. She said she can't bear to look at the Alanna quartet, but that that was okay, because it just meant she could see what she was doing better now. She also said, in response to another question, that people who say, "You can't do that," or "Girls can't be 'x'," are really just talking about the way they see the world, and about what they themselves can't do. Which made a lot of sense to me.

Again, the people. This time, I was going to the DS9 reunion panel. Splash waited in all my lines for me this weekend, so I have to thank her for that. *smooches* Avery Brooks basically *is* Sisko, in the best possible way. He and Cirroc Lofton (who played Jake Sisko), said they thought of each other as family. It was a really interesting panel, although not as funny or wacky as others I've been to.

Then, as a special treat, Splash and I went to a panel for... THE MIDDLEMAN. So fun! A really great fan-run panel with panelists who are complete dorks and really awesome. I HAVE to download the episodes and watch them ASAP.

Later that night, after food, [livejournal.com profile] splash_the_cat, [livejournal.com profile] besyd, and [livejournal.com profile] ultranos_fic (WHO IS AWESOMESAUCE), and I went on a mission for booze. There was a slight incident with a rum bottle that gave me some superficial cuts and left me smelling like rum, but I was largely unhurt. Rum was replaced, and the drunken Iron Man watching party was scheduled for....

Day Four: After the Marathon

Splash and I skipped something this morning, I think. Anyway, we did make it to a reading by John Scalzi. You guys, I absolutely have to read this man's books. And you probably should, too. He was excellent.

After the reading, we ate, and then we went to the Don S. Davis memorial panel, which was sad and somber and in which people cried and/or very nearly cried. Awful, and yet good to hear people's memories.

After that we "trekked" over to the Sheraton for the Star Trek panel's Miss Klingon Empire Beauty Pageant, which was HILARIOUS. I'd heard it was awesome, and it was. Michael Dorn even helped judge, and pretended to kiss one of the contestants when she proposed.

Dinner, and then it was time for...Drunken Iron Man Mini-Track Watching Party! Only no one ended up drunk, probably because we were too tired/full from dinner. *sighs* There's always next year. Also, "watching" the movie actually meant, "Squeeing loudly and commenting over every detail!" Which was fun, and lasted well after the movie ended.

Whew!

Day Five: Dead Con Day

I don't really want to say too much about Monday. The only con thing I did was go to the Stargate track Science vs. Myth panel, and that was a lot more fun than expected--some really great audience interaction and questions.

I had one final lunch with Splash, Ultranos (and her friend), and Besyd. and then it was time to get our bags and leave for the airport. *mourns* I really almost cried when it was time to go to my plane, and not just because the airport security was rude to me.

It was such a great weekend, I didn't really want it to end, and I MISSED everyone who couldn't be there, and hope I can see more of you this next year, and meet still more of you.

*hugs*
